Katy has never left the industry and is working a lot. Adele releases one album made of the same ballads every 5-6 years.

Trolling aside, at the end of the day, 30 is not streaming friendly and they clearly underestimated the decline of the sales model. She's also over 30 and it's going to be harder and harder to sustain the level of success she's had (as is the case with nearly every female artist in history). She's had an incredible run and will likely go down the Whitney, Mariah, Aretha route in terms of long term relevance so there's not much to complain about.  

 

Of course we say all this as if 30 hasn't sold millions of copies and had an 11 week smash (that could have easily gone longer), but still.

 

She also needs to change things up a bit (and I don't mean in terms of songs like "Oh my God" and "Can I Get It"; "All Night Parking and "My Little Love" were a good first step).
