One was bought and hyped by the entire general public during a time where that type of thing could still be achieved. The other was mostly bought and hyped by stans and media publications. That's not an attack on Taylor, just more-so a circumstance of our current culture and the declining relevance of the music industry as a whole. To Taylor's credit, she can garner more GP hype than any other artist and she was able to get her base to rally behind it and purchase multiple copies. It's still an impressive accomplishment, but the actual public couldn't have cared less. Adele could break that record with her next release (she won't unless she stuffs them with stimulus checks or something) and she would be in the same situation as Taylor. It's just a different time.

When Gen Alpha takes over in a couple of years tbh. Gen Z aren't necessarily conservative as a whole (they're actually pretty progressive for the most part, especially older ones) but it seems like their apathy towards everything made them sympathetic to some parts of cultural conservatism. Things like COVID, inflation/the economy, rapidly changing technological advances, feeling like they're falling behind compared to previous generations, etc, has made them yearn for more traditional values. Not because they're conservative but because they want something that feels familiar, if that makes any sense.

I actually think dems will sweep in every swing state. Again, not because people love dems suddenly but because people truly hate Trump and want to send a message. Polling last year made it seem like dems were in trouble in places like NJ and VA and they swept. Trump in 26 is a completely different type of unpopular from Trump in 18, where republicans did well outside of competitive congressional districts.

Funny enough, this result would have been a huge victory for the left if not for the god awful polling in this country.

I'm sorry but I'm glad Hong lost. She was not ready for primetime and the only way this movement is going to continue to gain momentum is with serious candidates. We don't need a Kairi Lake on the left.

MAGA has failed, Biden's "return to normalcy" centrism failed, like... what do these political pundits think is going to happen if things continue to get worse for people? Democratic socialism is the cool, counter-culture now.

Like Communion said, those kind of go hand in hand. Hong is someone who I like personally but I don't really think she's fit to be the governor of a state tbh. The whole WI governor's race was filled with bad candidates from the start though so I'm not surprised she has the best chance to win the primary. The DNC really went out of their way this year to get the worst possible candidates for a lot of these primaries. I don't think Hong should be the nominee. El-Sayed is a strong candidate who I believe can and will win, Hong will likely lose and it will be used against progressives in 28 as "proof" that they can't win in swing states.

This style of politics has done, and will continue to do, more damage to the democratic party than any DSA candidate ever could.

Prior to this weekend, I thought Stevens was a lock to win after the establishment threw everything behind her (including a fake Obama endorsement). The fact she's losing at all is a disaster for her imo.

Any other election year, I would be concerned but I also remember last year's polling saying there was going to be a republican governor in New Jersey and Sherril won handily because of Trump's unpopularity. I imagine we'll see similar situations this year. For instance, Ossoff is going to easily win re-election but he would have never won in the first place if not for the unique situation 2020 presented.

I agree. I've gone back and forth on whether she should run for president in 2028, but there really isn't going to be a better opportunity for her (or the left for that matter). The economic conditions for the majority of Americans are ripe for a left candidate to win. We tried the "return to normalcy" shtick with Biden in 2020 and it didn't work out in the end. Unless black voters turn on Kamala, the only other way to compete with her in the primary is to run from the left, which has worked out well for a lot of these progressive candidates.

El-Sayed even winning by 1% point is a disaster for the democratic establishment considering they went all out to try and stop him. "Electability" and goodwill with enough dem voters was the only thing preventing the left from ascending nationally and all of that died when Trump got re-elected.
