The only way to sing a Mariah song properly is not to sing it note for note, but to sing it smart with a good arrangement. No one has really done the work and they seem to just sing it impromptu on the spot without any preparation. The only person who got close to singing it smart was Kelly doing Fantasy. It was cute, inoffensive, and respectful and didn't change the structure of the song to the point where it was unrecognizable, and it wasn't a bunch of wailing to hit notes that, sure, you could hit, but you once you're up there you're not doing anything musically satisfying. Reminds me of how people try to do Whitney tributes singing IWALY and the crowd goes crazy when they hit the same note Whitney did but they have none of the power, clarity, or delivery. Mariah understands this, which is why her tributes are always fantastic. Patti LaBelle's If Only You Knew/Somewhere Over the Rainbow. Stevie Wonder's You and I.
