Just to be clear, I'm not saying the protestors don't want to vote for him. I don't know these people. I was just responding to all the people in this thread claiming that "the left eats their own" and insinuating that protesting a political figure = refusing to support said political figure. @byzantium is right that it's a weirdly American thing (of course now being exported elsewhere) to vilify protests and vastly overstate their impact. The idea that people should blindly support—and never critique or protest—a politician is part of why we have a crisis of political apathy among young people. Why get involved or care about politics if you're constantly told to shut up and enjoy whatever slop you're being fed? I'm not saying Zohran is doing that—but like... he should be protested for directing funding to explicitly Zionist groups!

As an Aussie living in NYC, it IS frustrating! Also worth saying that the protests are in no way illustrative of the general mood among the young left in NYC, most of whom (myself included) are disappointed in some of the choices Mamdani has made but would still happily vote for him again.

No, I think he's being (fairly) protested by the left for his strategy to combat antisemitism by funding explicitly pro-Zionist orgs. Sure, I don't think he'd be my first target for a protest at this moment, and the chant is cringe, but organizers are simply applying pressure to someone who gained his following/office in part by being actively pro-Palestinian. I'm with @Relampago. , I'd rather see Dems lose in an effort to change the terms of the cultural conversation than sell out their principles to win.

Also the grand irony of choosing who to vote for in a Senate race being described as "Sophie's choice," yet describing the Palestinian genocide as a genocide somehow invalidates the horror of the Holocaust...

What thrilling news to wake up to! I remember downloading In Case We Die from a blog after it dropped, meeting and interviewing her in 2016 when she was in label purgatory, following every high and low along the way, and it's just so satisfying to see it all come together for her like this both critically and commercially. Nobody deserves it more. As much as I adore it, this isn't my favourite T album, but I agree with Pitchfork that it's the most in touch with the zeitgeist—it feels like she genuinely was ahead of her time for so many years, so to see her get this recognition when a new generation is coming up and challenging what pop looks and sounds like and citing her as an inspiration… it's all just delicious. I love this for her.

Right, which I why I think that for the sake of all of our humanity, we need to be digging a little deeper before having a political hot take. People who are in here are not the average person in terms of political engagement. Understanding why Luigi was compelled to kill a CEO and shrugging off the non-political murder of this random woman are not part of the same movement. How many people in this thread work for a company or institution that is not entirely morally pure? I'm not saying this woman's death is something that needs to be nationally mourned, but I get really uncomfortable seeing progressives take the "who gives a ****" approach to (non-political) violence just because they don't like where she works. That does nothing for progressive movement politics and is just callous. Explicitly political violence is different and worthy of a nuanced conversation. This is just a kind of sad case about an unwell person killing a new mom in a non-targeted attack. The condensation of everything into a headline—and our refusal to do thirty seconds of additional research—is how we lose our critical thinking skills, and our humanity won't be far behind. None of this is about you or the original poster, it's just a trend I've been seeing in how we consume news and it really worries me.

I mean… I'm certainly not pro-bank in any capacity but this was just a 32 year old woman who was not a major decision maker in any capacity. VP means nothing these days. I'm not quite at the point where I'm cheering the wanton killing of anyone working at a capitalist institution…
