What do you think of her?

My opinion: Liked her somewhat during her early career and her rapport with Betty white, but overtime, she was just nasty. Never saw the appeal of her last era "the Professional ***** era". Literally her CNN interview, when she storms off for being called mean (generous wording) which she was. Evidence for this was found throughout her talk show, her stance on Palestine, the fat shaming, xenophobia, racism all in the name of humor.

One of my favourite comedians of all time. As she got older she became more unhinged. Can't agree with everything she did, since much of what she did was straight up bullying but she was quick witted and a trailblazer.

As a queer Mexican man, the only comedy from the US that really gets me every single time is from Jewish women — Joan Rivers, Jessica Kirson, Ilana Glazer, Fran Drescher, Chelsea Handler, Amy Schumer…

Joan was and will always be the greatest of them all. When she called Kesha a man was one of my favorite reads ever

she is legitimately one of the funniest human beings who's ever lived I know we don't know the whole scope of what funny people fully were like in person pre-recorded media after simply books/written media, but she can't not have been.

rant time

her humor remains timeless even when it bordered into the offensive. as she'd always say herself, she spared no one. she'd make an offensive comment about blind people or Mexican people or Irish people or gays, but then she'd do the same with the same energy for ethnically Jewish people like herself or me. she was a true trailblazer and the textbook definition of an American original. for that, for how she remained hilarious in the face of hardship and stress, she inspires me.

I may not agree with who she was politically. I know she had expressed zionist views and I have criticized her multiple times for that. I will not erase the damage she caused by spreading outdated and misinformed ideologies and I won't forgive her for that. at the same time, I know my own mother has defended zionism in the past. I won't forgive my mother for that but I also know that my mother is an extremely complex and highly intelligent human being (who beyond certain setbacks like zionist views and defending circumcision is actually quite progressive and I say that with my whole chest as her son) who I love unconditionally. I know that—and I say this again as someone who was raised Jewish and who, though isn't religious in the slightest anymore, will always be culturally/ethnically Jewish—Jews in the US have been historically brainwashed into thinking that zionism is a good thing when it's actually an awful colonialist mindset. I don't ever want to hear claims that I'm antisemitic or that I'm hateful or that i'm defending zionists or what have you. all of these perspectives are NNNNOPE! you guys know me. I know me. I can hold a certain love and appreciation for people even if they're severely misguided and have sh*t politics. and that's precisely how I feel with Joan. she made stupid choices and she said stupid things, yes, she also made the world laugh and was a beacon for what comedy could be. she also was known to be notably generous. so she's someone who's definitely been influential to me.
