First and foremost: This thread is actually a praise thread. Both Beyonce and Madonna are absolute Queens. What I want to highlight however is their courage and eagerness to move the needle REGARDLESS of trends. 

I think in both cases, the most admirable aspect of their careers is that they were/are never afraid of experimenting and pushing contemporary music. And not just that, in their projects, you can tell and feel how much work they did prior to that. They are students of music, they do their homework and are very deliberate about their approach, hence their albums being so well-crafted.

 

For Beyonce, a veteran in every sense of the word, to push herself creatively that much and with that much integrity, using her platform not to cater to charts, but to move discussions is nothing short of amazing. Its incredibly powerful to see a veteran like her (25+ years into her career) do that AND succeed the way she does. Both of them are trailblazers and the doors Beyonce is opening for Black artists is crazy. I think many dont realize how impactful she is because of their own privilege. But there are so many cases where Beyonce sparked discussions that helped opening doors for others.

It's clear Bey is in the middle of a 3 act era where each era she's like "*****, we black ppl helped shape these genres of music and y'all will deal instead of pretending we never did nothing for them: house, country and rock" and i'm living tbh.

 

She IS Madonna's successor in many ways. Madonna was daring to do things differently in her sound and production well in her 40's (Ray of Light, Music, Confessions) while Bey has a message behind her art right now.  (which Madonna did in her late 20's and 30's)

 

One thing that i love is how they actually like to create eras behind all of what they do. They still believe in the more traditional approach instead of releasing quick lil tik tok hits (at least during their eras).

 

Love Madame X or not, Madonna did give us 5 or 6 music videos with distinct sounds and visuals during her 60's. No one is doing it like her. 

 

Most 00's and 10's acts look and sound more bored than Madonna and Bey currently lmao.

Agreed, and even the oftentimes criticized Hard Candy was Madonna exploring contemporary Pop with RnB elements at the time, hence her working with Pharell so much. She was well aware that many would side-eye her for doing that in her 50s, but she was deliberate about it, wanting to make a point that even in your 50s, you can still be fierce, release music that appeals to the young without losing ur own identity (because at the end of the day, Hard Candy still sounds like a Madonna record).

Beyoncé is the first female pop superstar since Madonna that's still culturally relevant and actively releasing art that's important to her overall legacy at over 40 instead of being artistically on autopilot which is what makes her so exciting as an artist at this stage of her career.

Aside from the pop greats (Prince, Madonna, MJ, Janet, George Michael), Beyonce is the only one from the past 25 years that has succeeded in becoming a true artist.

 

The others (Kylie, Britney, Gaga, etc) either burned out, sold out, or chose to rest on their laurels...

This. The two of them have managed to create long-standing career matched with artistic development and looking at excel in their fields. You can argue that Madonna's last few albums didnt meat the quality of her 80s-00s output, but at least she did dive into other genres and experimented, which is more than you can say about *certain* so-called legends of contemporary pop mainstream status.

 

The two of them are the ones to look for when it comes to both success AND artistry. The rest are trying too hard to catch up.

Beyonce is a very talented, creative and hard working woman and that’s one of the reasons Madonna loves and respects her. 
 

As for our dear Madge, no one can be like her. No one can release Sex book, Erotica album and Body of Evidence movie at the same time and survive

She wanted to name the Hard Candy album   Black Madonna but her handlers told her not to. I kinda wish she did. Hard Candy is a terrible album title. Black Madonna sounds so iconic and it fits because her first album named Madonna people thought she was black 

Black radio started playing Madonna first because people really believed she was black . This was before she had music videos out
