I came across this video which talks about the fallout after the mass Latto song leaks which sparked immense online discourse about the state of female rap.

 

Female rap is incredibly disrespected by the rap community and the GP in general with very few artists successfully crossing over despite the genre allegedly "flourishing". It's still difficult for many upcoming female rap girls to get their foot through the door, let alone get consistent record label support or a "hit record". Therefore, it seems that investing in female rappers in the long term has become "unreliable" despite the overwhelming new artists over the past few years. Female rappers being exposed for using writers and those artists being pushed to the forefront usually focus on selling an image first and quality music second. That being said, does female rap deserve the (lack of) respect its receiving, or should there be more?

Yeah it does tbh. Besides a handful of notable examples like Kendrick Lamar and J Cole, male rap is hardly any more innovative or less disposable than female rap. They rap about similar things too but men rapping about sex is allowed for some reason wheras women are derided for doing the same. Men are allowed to use a similar flow all the time but if a woman does it she's mocked for it. Women are dragged for low sales, but I've seen all sorts of flops (including DaBaby's pitiful numbers) justified by male rap fans. It really does come down to sexism at the end of the day, it's sad that we're still here in 2022.

If you put out quality music you deserve respect.

the current female rap does not deserve respect. Its just lazy and desperate. these girls dont rap for a passion they literally recite lyrics are part-time rappers but influencers for the majority. all they want is to make money theres no art behind it like missy elliott, lil kim and nicki have done

but floetry, missy Elliot, Queen latifah, left eye really have created some great works in the past. It’s just rekindling and Injecting that special spark and magic again

Yes ofc it deserves respect  I just wish Nicki was more open to the new gen instead of wanting to constantly self insert herself into it all in the name of a made up title like the Queen of Rap

the title was to catch eyes and spark discussion, plus piggybacking off of the video I linked in the OP. i'm a big female rap fan and would never throw it under the bus, just wanted to see what ATRL thinks 

 

 

Nicki Minaj dominated a male dominated field and now several female rapper are constantly achieving success. They definitely deserve the utmost respect. It’s much harder as a female rapper than majority of the other genres
