It's actually the only song from Witness that deserved to be a hit. 

It's so good, so catchy, but she ruined everything with her persona at the time. 
Everything else from the album is just trash, you're delusional if you think that any other song could've done better as the lead single. 

It was a boring lead single - all her other bops had that infectious chorus and this one just didn't

nah, the lyrics + chorus + whole song are just... clunky

 

and its especially funny she did that whole "progressive pop" thing only to become low-key right wing a few years later

as many others have said this perhaps shouldn't have been the lead but yes it's an overhated song.

She was completely delusional and pretended like she'd written Brave New World during the promo for this song. The problem with Witness was that everything that was cool about Katy went out the window to service some artistic ambition and she was clearly not up to the challenge of truly evolving her image and bringing her audience along with her - a signature of the best pop stars.
