How's everyone doing?  I hope the 2017 members are a bit interested in programming, to keep this going.

What are everyone's plans for this year?  Anyone doing IT projects?  Anyone doing programming as a job?

Introduce yourself!

i'm currently tasked to look over programmers/web developers; most projects are in c# and vb.net.

Just switched back into full stack development after being more back end oriented. It’s pretty fun! I’m excited to be exploring more options. Can’t believe it’s been 3 months at my new role already.

I'm actually graduating as a Software engineer this year, my main goal is to also get my first job this year, any tips for interviews? How should I prepare?

I thought this thread wasn't made :rip:

let me close mine

anyway, we use Java at work, and it's kinda boring.. I want to go into embedded work. I love C and assembly. Anyone here do embedded work?

I currently make around 60k contracting for a foreign company while living in a third world country. How do I find those remote software dev roles that pay upwards of 100k and don't care about your nationality? I've been rejected by multiple companies who claim to be fully remote simply because of my poor passport :rip:

1) these 100k salaries are for seniors/ upper-mid level developers.

2) only American companies pay these salaries

3) they only pay them to developers already living in 1st world countries

the reason they outsource their work in the first place, sadly, is to get the same work done at a lower salary... if they had to pay every Indian software developer 100k, they would not give them the work in the first place.

My suggestion? try and move to Canada or Australia. It's relatively "easy" to immigrate to (especially compared to the US) and software developers are in demand. once you're based here, you can definitely make that 100k salary.

good luck!

do u think this is enough to make a portfolio and be employable? I don't have a CS degree unfortunately. :dancehall:

neither do I.

but I went to community college and got a certificate in web and database development. It really doesn't matter, but having something official on paper helps you get through a lot of HR filters.

Trust me, once you're in, it doesn't matter. I get job offers on linkedin all the time now, and I'm only 18 months into my first developer job.

don't undersell how difficult it can be to get that first foot in the door, but yes, once you've managed you're pretty set

oh it's very difficult. took me almost a year to get my first job.

I got extremely lucky. I did a bootcamp (pretty much a waste of time/money for the record) and got a job before it ended and have been working since

but I know people that have been struggling to get that first job for years :'(

my certificate from community college was a waste of time too, but it got me past HR.

companies want to hire experienced programmers on a beginner's salary. it's a joke. a huge laundry list of requirements (including using very specific proprietary software like :deadbanana:) and then add in "starting salary 40k". but once you get past that hump... oh it is smooth sailing.

ksjghfdkh I'm a month into mine with four more to go :toofunny3: I'm really liking it though, but ya you don't need a bootcamp to succeed, I think it just accelerates the process

make sure you have your own projects to point to that aren't from the bootcamp

For sure, I'm making one right now for my work using radio data and python, it's cute! :flower:

Ugh, hopefully soon. My employment contract says that I'm supposed to be working at my current place until April of 23, but I don't think my company takes it too seriously :cupid: I'd be making twice as much as a data analyst than my current position now so I'm tempted to try and break it. Ideally I'll work for Sp*tify once this bootcamp is over tho :heart2:
