A question to native speakers about the time: does everyone just say 10:30 as ten thirty or 2:45 as two forty-five, or do people actually go out of their way to say half past ten and quarter to three? A lot of students really struggle with that, so it it's not used in real speech, then there's no point in forcing that on them (even if the curriculum says otherwise).

I'm not sure about the other varieties of English, but both are used pretty interchangeably in British English. Part of me is tempted to even go so far as to say half, quarter, etc. is more common here, at least from my experience. You're much more likely to specifically hear "half (past) ten" instead of "ten thirty" in day-to-day life, for example. (The "past" is also optional, but only with "half past," you'd obviously never say "quarter three" instead of "quarter past three.")

You could get away with only learning the [hour] [minutes] format, and that is usually the preferred way in formal settings like job interviews to mitigate confusion and misunderstanding. But in everyday speech, you'll inevitably encounter the other, at least in the UK.

Also: for 12 o'clock, you can get away with saying quarter to or quarter/half past midnight if it's referring to 12am, but never quarter to or quarter/half past midday for 12pm.

Thanks, I'm a bit surpised to hear that the 'longer' format is common and the 'easier to teach' format is more formal, though it makes sense somehow. We lean towards the British English when it comes to teaching, so I suppose it'd be useful for the students to learn both, though I'm curious about other varities as well since students tend to be more exposed to American media, so they often ask about how it is in American English for personal reasons.

it's not uncommon to not even say which hour, just "half past/to" or "quarter past/to". it's assumed ure referring to the current hour
