This is so unique

 

 

It's a new year and a perfect opportunity to let go of old grudges, so I decided to give Kana Nishino's b-sides a try since there's a claim going around that it's some of her best material. It turned out that she worked with TABOO's producer on a bunch of those, and while that doesn't mean that they'd have the same quality, that should at least bring out a new side of her, right? Well, after listening to them, all I can say that you gotta do what you do best. This one was cute, though, only because it's close to her usual style.

Graves: Oh my god, I already thought her Pink Spider cover was kind of brazen but on this one she really put an instrumental from The Fame over a corny '80s hit and it just sends me. Had to boost my score out of sheer respect.

Kyle-x: I was sooo obsessed with this video when it dropped.

AMIT: so catchy the chorus was imprinted on my mind from the beginning, KONO MAMAA

Britneyfan09: Absolutely love the video for this! One of my favorites.

Curaga: This has the same sound/instruments as a lot of her cool electropop songs, but something about it puts it in the corny category for me

Graves: So glad that she took the time to re-record this one, the original was... let me put it nicely, missing something. Melancholic bop, probably a bigger hit than any of the actual singles from this record..

Himawari means sunflower. Not sure why they've chosen to style the title like that though!

 

50. The Show Must Go On from A One (2015)

 

 

AVERAGE: 7.46

Graves: Perseverance is a pretty key theme for late-career Ayu, I want to say at least since Guilty? Or Rock'n'Roll Circus? Either way, I always like hearing that motif in her songs. Even if this is nothing groundbreaking for her, it's a decent tune and I can appreciate it thematically. The breakdown during the bridge is really trying to make it all work. And while I still find it a tad dated, it is charming even so.

Kyle-x: Ugh. A ONE is such a damn good album. This song goes tf off.

AMIT: an expansive bop, not exactly outside her wheelhouse, but I appreciate it for what it is

Curaga: Wooooow, ok, Miss Kyle-X! This was an inspired choice. This has become one of my fav Ayu songs and got me into A ONE.
