OT: Her American stats are so damn impressive. It’s sad that she wasn’t really able to transition to the streaming era with her new releases. In Common was a whole bop.

The solo is definitely more remembered, but at no point did I even bring up Nicki for this to be in question?

“Karma” was released in 2004, a period when singles certifications were practically non-existent due to CD singles not selling (outside of Competition/Winners & Charity Singles) and most radio hits not being physically released altogether.

 

It also wasn’t a ‘hit’ that crossed over into the digital/streaming era and garnered big recurrent sales/streams ala. “Dilemma; Beautiful; Crazy In Love; In Da Club; Yeah!” etc. so it makes sense that it’s only Gold. 
 

Case in point: “IIAGY” is from the same album but has held up in popularity and radio status since its release thus the sales/streams to boost it.

Older songs pre digital age typically don't go much higher than Platinum or 2x. Audiences preferred to buy the album back then, or pirate from Napster and lime wire.

Indeed.

 

1999/2000 were the last years where CD/Physical singles in the U.S could see 3x platinum success or higher due to sales. 

 

2001-2004 was a dead period for singles sales and certifications hence the biggest hits from that era having low certifications - they were nothing more than massive radio hits.

 

With streaming, however, a lot of those hits will get a boost luckily. 

So the new album has 2 gold singles. Why did you say that she flopped? At her age...

it's eligible for 8x platinum

it sold 7.5M over time and has to have 500k worth of SPS

That's the important takeaway here. Everyone calls her a flop, but the new album has 2 gold singles.. 20 years into her career.

Radio doesnt matter for certifications, it was MASSIVE on radio

lol FACTS. She took it straight old school Soul with that one. Diary was also a staple in radio, at least the R&B stations. I remember the slight ruckus that ensued about the phone number (489-4608) in the song. Fools out here was really calling that number hoping Alicia would answer, not realizing that it's probably fake and if it was her real number, it's gonna be the area code where she lived obv a lot of people had to change their numbers. I was so dead.

 

Talking about this is taking me back. Alicia is also on her nostalgia tip lately on her YouTube channel, playing some fan favorite album tracks from her early albums. She was really serving us at such a young age.

How is Girl on fire just platinum? It has sold at least 1,200,000 pure copies and the first single is x5 platinum ahahah
