It's taking so long to dethrone "Shape Of You". I don't like "That's What I Like" but I want another No. 1 on iTunes not the same almost three months.

Soundcloud counts towards the Hot 100, yeah.

What is this? I dont understand how a song can "lose" sales.

"Hello" slips 1-2 after four weeks atop Digital Songs, however, down by 66 percent to 112,000 sold. Chart fine print: the sales drop of "Hello" is owed to iTunes customers who opted to "complete" purchases of 25 by upgrading earlier purchases of the song to a full album. Effectively, those who completed the album were returning the song, thus translating to a net sales total, contributing to its Digital Songs chart fall.

I think one of the worst CMA effect was suffered by Britney with "Hold It Against Me"... Her sales for album release week were negative :biblio:

"Complete my album" thing is optional, and it is very good it exists (preventing paying for the same song twice), but the numbers shouldn't be reduced, you're right about that.

I get that it is annoying and can be messy, just the fact that is possible to have "negative sales" is a mess but there's a logic behind that, if the whole thing about the complete my album feature is to prevent paying for the same song twice then why should that sale count twice (as a single and as an album sale)? when you buy an album the songs included on it do not get any sales, so if you are buying an album and you are indeed not paying for that song twice then isn't it right that it just counts as an album sale?

On the other hand before digital downloads people used to buy CD singles before the album with that single was released and they didn't have the option of returning the bought single CD, so they were paying for the song twice. I'm just saying the song shouldn't be paid for twice, but the downloads numbers shouldn't be reduced.

I see your point but you are talking about a different era of music consumption; yes, before people had to pay for the song twice or if they really wanted to avoid that then they could wait for the album to come out but now times have changed and now is possible to buy a single and then the album while only paying once for it so it makes sense that now it is possible that if you only pay once it is counted as only on sale

The same logic should apply: if you digitally download a song before you buy an album then you're buying a single and it should count (even if the buyer gets reimbursed at the moment a "complete my album" option is chosen). BB and Nielsen are already counting track downloads as "track equivalent albums" (10 downloaded tracks = 1 TEA), which are part of their SPS "units" used for compiling BB200, so the decision to subtract "complete my album" sales is very questionable.

Complete My Album effect makes sense. If you spend $1.29 on a single, then finish buying the album for $8.71 because that purchase, then you essentially just put a down payment on an album in advance.

It shouldn't effect a song's performance on Hot 100 though, is what's annoying. If a song sold 150K that week, and then lost 100K because CMA, then it's overall sales should be changed by 100K, but it shouldn't have 50K sales go towards it's Hot 100 charting, it should have 150K since that's how many people bought it that week.

Well the song in that case does have 150k sales count towards the Hot 100. Even if it has only 50k on digital songs that week.

It also fell from #4 to #11 on the Hot 100 that week. :deadbanana: It got hit hard, and I'm glad album releases don't have those effects anymore.

So let's say that a bunch of songs get released before the album release, so let's say that I buy five songs out of the same album and then when it comes out I complete the album, should that count as an album sale and still count as an individually sale for the five songs I bought first? even if I payed almost half the price for the album? when an album is released people could buy almost all the songs individually and then complete the album just so it counts twice, doesn't seem fair to me.

In my opinion, if they only pay for the song once and only own the song once it should count as a sale only once, and while I get your point with the TEA thing I feel like that's a different thing that should be discussed on a side note, I still think the CMA effect is right.

Now that was terrible and something I was totally against, it's great that they changed that
