Katy Perry - "Watch It Burn"
"Bandaids" was a little clunky lyrically (though great), and "Watch It Burn" is giving Bonnie collab without Max's production. The songwriting on both is vastly superior to anything on 143 and most of Smile and Witness. They're both kind of rough around the edges production-wise, like the album tracks (not singles) on OOTB and Teenage Dream. I personally love them because she sounds like she's singing with a real band. Both could've been slightly more glossy, but I don't think they were going for that. Honestly, Katy and Max aren't a magic combo like he is for other collaborators. It was Katy, Max, Luke, Bonnie, and Benny Blanco that worked. I think Katy and Dan Nigro would be a much better match. His taste level and production is perfect for her, and his palette is a little more varied than Justin Tranter's. He could definitely give her an elevated OOTB-type album.

The mixing on this is so damn good. Serban, who mixed WIB, also mixed her earlier stuff before handing it over to his assistant John Hanes starting with Prism, but he's the sole mixer on this and it really makes a huge difference. The song sounds so good on Air Pod Pros. It's loud as hell but you can still hear every little detail in the drums, vocals, and background vocals.

Also, her label is useless. Half of the marketing team for the first three albums was out by Witness and all of them left before Smile. I don't know why she keeps exercising her optional albums when she could shop elsewhere. That said, Spotify makes it virtually impossible for legacy artists who aren't Taylor Swift to succeed. Katy's all over Apple Music.

Were you guys alive in 2005? This is what emo rock sounded like then. The enunciation is very Pete Wentz/Fallout Boy/Death Cab For Cutie/Taking Back Sunday etc.

It's so great how she hit two balls out of the park with this by: (1) Giving the Teenage Dream fans what sounds like a super-confident Bonnie co-write without actually working with her, and (2) Giving people with good taste who crave authenticity from her guitars again. Katy can definitely write a dance-pop song, they're just not as marketable for her as they would be for other artists because they seem less authentic given where she started. Even her best dance bops have some semblance of a real band (guitar and/or bass guitar and/or real drums).

Let's hope she leads New Music Friday. The song actually being great might help her overcome all the usual obstacles.

I wouldn't get my hopes up for an album anytime in the near future. I don't think she's recorded nearly enough material yet.

It's much easier for newer artists to get priority on Spotify. The same is true for Spotify's auto play feature (it's only available to new artists). Only Apple really values legacy artists. Katy will probably be at the front of Apple's BNM playlist. I'm not a fan of the current iteration of Capitol, but I do know via KP's team that Spotify makes the ultimate determination regarding TTH.

Remember when people were arguing that this was a dance song like six pages ago? Glad the outro is out.

Pretty sure TTHs is only available if the last single was huge.

All will be fine, I'm just saying, cats shouldn't complain about the video if they don't like it because it will fuel a fire for other fandoms to spread. The song is excellent.

It sounds like the live version without adlibs or the speakerphone effect. It's a little cleaner obviously. But it's no more rocky than the live version.

Don't put your eggs all in the video basket. It's fine but the song is better than the video. For the diehards in here, just flood socials about how good the song is.

There are no "added guitars." They've always been there.
