Katy Perry - "Watch It Burn"
"Bandaids" was a little clunky lyrically (though great), and "Watch It Burn" is giving Bonnie collab without Max's production. The songwriting on both is vastly superior to anything on 143 and most of Smile and Witness. They're both kind of rough around the edges production-wise, like the album tracks (not singles) on OOTB and Teenage Dream. I personally love them because she sounds like she's singing with a real band. Both could've been slightly more glossy, but I don't think they were going for that. Honestly, Katy and Max aren't a magic combo like he is for other collaborators. It was Katy, Max, Luke, Bonnie, and Benny Blanco that worked. I think Katy and Dan Nigro would be a much better match. His taste level and production is perfect for her, and his palette is a little more varied than Justin Tranter's. He could definitely give her an elevated OOTB-type album.

The mixing on this is so damn good. Serban, who mixed WIB, also mixed her earlier stuff before handing it over to his assistant John Hanes starting with Prism, but he's the sole mixer on this and it really makes a huge difference. The song sounds so good on Air Pod Pros. It's loud as hell but you can still hear every little detail in the drums, vocals, and background vocals.

Also, her label is useless. Half of the marketing team for the first three albums was out by Witness and all of them left before Smile. I don't know why she keeps exercising her optional albums when she could shop elsewhere. That said, Spotify makes it virtually impossible for legacy artists who aren't Taylor Swift to succeed. Katy's all over Apple Music.

Were you guys alive in 2005? This is what emo rock sounded like then. The enunciation is very Pete Wentz/Fallout Boy/Death Cab For Cutie/Taking Back Sunday etc.

Katy Perry - "Watch It Burn"
It's so great how she hit two balls out of the park with this by: (1) Giving the Teenage Dream fans what sounds like a super-confident Bonnie co-write without actually working with her, and (2) Giving people with good taste who crave authenticity from her guitars again. Katy can definitely write a dance-pop song, they're just not as marketable for her as they would be for other artists because they seem less authentic given where she started. Even her best dance bops have some semblance of a real band (guitar and/or bass guitar and/or real drums).

Let's hope she leads New Music Friday. The song actually being great might help her overcome all the usual obstacles.

Katy Perry - "Watch It Burn"
I wouldn't get my hopes up for an album anytime in the near future. I don't think she's recorded nearly enough material yet.

It's much easier for newer artists to get priority on Spotify. The same is true for Spotify's auto play feature (it's only available to new artists). Only Apple really values legacy artists. Katy will probably be at the front of Apple's BNM playlist. I'm not a fan of the current iteration of Capitol, but I do know via KP's team that Spotify makes the ultimate determination regarding TTH.

Remember when people were arguing that this was a dance song like six pages ago? Glad the outro is out.

Pretty sure TTHs is only available if the last single was huge.

All will be fine, I'm just saying, cats shouldn't complain about the video if they don't like it because it will fuel a fire for other fandoms to spread. The song is excellent.

It sounds like the live version without adlibs or the speakerphone effect. It's a little cleaner obviously. But it's no more rocky than the live version.

Katy Perry - "Watch It Burn"
Don't put your eggs all in the video basket. It's fine but the song is better than the video. For the diehards in here, just flood socials about how good the song is.

There are no "added guitars." They've always been there.

Katy Perry - "Watch It Burn"
She's doing what made people fall in love with her in the first place instead of trying to appease the gays who live for "Bon Apetit" and "Walking On Air" (great songs I love that do nothing for women of all ages or straight people generally). Katy's at her best over a guitar rhythm; this is true even on Teenage Dream and Smile (e.g. "Tucked" and "Daisies"). "Never Really Over" probably would've been a Top 5 with guitars or even a real bass guitar in addition to the synths.

Katy Perry - "Watch It Burn"
Real talk: All will be fine since it's premiering with a splashy music video. What they've done so far has been great to put the fans on notice without spoiling some of the best parts of the song for the general public. Nobody is really paying attention yet except for the people who are obsessed with her or hate her on social media. I think my only regret would be not starting with "Watch It Burn," because "Bandaids" would probably do much better if it had followed WIB. "Bandaids" is not a ballad, but it's more emo (and it would definitely sound like a ballad more stripped down). "Watch It Burn" is to "Part of Me" as "Bandaids" is to "Wide Awake."

Katy Perry - "Watch It Burn"
It's not in there. Neither are the adlibs. But I promise it's near perfect. It's her most bulletproof single since Prism. I don't expect it to be some massive hit given the past decade, but it might make a dent and do really well at radio. I think the one outro repeat is smart because it all builds up to it and it's such a rewarding payoff that you want to listen to whole song again and again.

Katy Perry - "Watch It Burn"
Can we talk about how it sounds like a Bonnie collab, even though it's not? All the rhyming! No clunky lyrics. Orlando was bad for her pen game.
-
Katy Perry - "Watch It Burn"
Oh wait, the "adlibs" are in the outro, but they're not adlibs. The high part is a harmony but she's singing it as an adlib in the performance. So it's there, but it's underneath the main vocal instead of on top of it.
-
Katy Perry - "Watch It Burn"
No. It has a crowd chant. I think she just got excited and wanted to sing higher live. The adlibs would've distracted from the catchiness of the outro since it's only repeated once.
-
Katy Perry - "Watch It Burn"
It's 2:50-something. Glad the outro is out there! It's hard to hear live but it actually has a bunch of people doing the chant at the end in the background (like "Teenage Dream"). Also, every second chorus has harmonies...the outro does not have the adlibs she did live. The verses on the studio sound a bit better.

Katy Perry - "Watch It Burn"
There's not. She had 4-5 songs for an EP and now the others will probably never see the light of day. I wanted an angry album too, but I'm pleased that even if KP7 is more upbeat because of Trudeau, she'll be staying in this authentic pop-rock lane. I imagine she'll record the bulk of it this fall and winter after she's done with the festival circuit in Europe.

I've heard the whole song. I'M SORRY I KNOW THAT IT HURTS ... FINALLY I PUT MYSELF FIRST

Nah, I'm just saying rock music doesn't sound like your thing or that you know much about music theory. I'm gay.
