Include Mimi. Abdul was a pop music force from 1989 - 1991. She was part of that once-in-a-blue-moon nexus of pop divas. This phenomenon won't happen again until 2009 - 2011. (Interestingly, La Ciccone, Houston, Jackson & Mariah are included in the top 10 greatest Hot 100 artists of all time.) In 1990, M, Damita, Nippy, Paula & Carey all scored #1 hits in the Hot 100. 'Twas repeated in 1991. And then Abdul stupidly released 'Vibeology' that halted her top 3 singles run on Billboard. 'Twas downhill from then on.

You're correct! What I meant was solo #1 singles by a female act. Edited my orig post. Anyway, Nippy became the female with most #1 singles, solo or otherwise, in 1988 via "Where Do Broken Hearts Go?" A year later, M tied the record when "Like A Prayer" became her 7th #1 hit.

Call Her Ms Ross was the first female to chart 5 SOLO #1s at the Hot 100. In 1987, Madonna broke her record when "Who's that Girl" became the QoP's 6th #1 single. In early '88, Whitney 'The Voice' Houston also surpassed Diana and tied M via "So Emotional."

Per MNation chart guru HG: "Erotica" lost to "The Chase" by only 3k. Heartbreaking! 'Twas 170k vs 167k. "Sex" was also released the same week. The buying public obviously prioritized the 'best-selling coffee table book ever' over the CD. Likewise, "I'm Breathless" was blocked by another flavor of the year rapper, MC Hammer. So, M had to be a runner-up twice in 1990. The other rapper, Vanilla Ice, eventually became her lover and appeared on "Sex." 😉
