No.1 hits that feel like No.2 hits

Featured Replies

Saw this post by a billboard staff member on Bluesky and got me wondering what everyone else thought applied

Listened the podcast discussing it and they say that the best number twos are:

• Songs by generational superstars before they reach their commercial peak (Paint It Black, You Make Me Wanna, You Belong With Me, Problem. Hotline Bling, Don't Start Now)

• Critical darlings having their most commercial moment (Like a Rolling Stone, Dancing in the Dark, Work It)

• Songs with weird structures compared to the rest of pop music (Bohemian Rhapsody, Love to Love You Baby, Purple Rain, Bad Romance, Take Me to Church)

• Songs that represent an artist or sub-genre that is tied to a specific moment in time but were never thee most popular (ie, Creedance Clearwater Revival, En Vogue, Linkin Park, Fall Out Boy, One Direction, Fetty Wap, Twenty One Pilots, pre-streaming country songs like Big Named Sue, Take Me Home, How Do I Live etc)

• One Hit Wonders (or artists that feel like them) (Peter Frampton, The Game

Lol. Don't get me wrong. I Stan Ariana down but I have to be objective :

A lot of her #1 "hits" in recent years were so frontloaded that they might as well have peaked at #2. Lowkey not deserving of the top spot.

Stuck with U, Rain On Me & yes, and? are the worst offenders. 6 years later and I'm still annoyed that ROM only spent 4 weeks total in the Hot 100 top 10. It was supposed to be a +10 week chart topping smash hit by two pop divas. Not a quick #1 single with no longevity rip

I didn't put in my OP but "Die For You" (remix) belongs on that list too.

The remix of "Save Yours Tears" is probably the #1 single by Ariana Grande that feels the most like a chart topping smash hit this decade. That song is a bop and a half. Well deserved !

hate that I made you love me has stayed in the top 10 for 13 weeks since its release and is predicted to be at #4 in its 14th week. It also just hit #1 on pop radio and its daily streams are doing well. How is that frontloaded sis?

Call Me is a horrible example, Blondie had had a #1 before and after it and it perfectly encapsulated the post-punk trend that every artist was trying to hop on in 1980. Made perfect sense as a #1 to me, and was in fact the year-end #1 as well

All of Taylor's singles tbh, they don't even sound or feel like top 5s

Thank god we have a metric above "feels" like streaming and sales.

OT: Break My Soul

those unknown and forgotten taylor #1s this decade that nobody outside her fandom knows
