Ladies of Jazz: The Rate | The winner is... (p. 104)
Just realized I've been listening to the wrong version of Billie's Strange Fruit this entire time, I always preferred Nina's cover but this recording is definitely on par with hers so I'm not mad at it winning. Thanks for hosting Connor! Wish I participated more in the thread but it was great discovering so many new songs. My personal top 10: 1. Sinnerman 2. Johnny Guitar 3. Cry Me a River 4. Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood 5. I'm a Woman 6. I Put a Spell on You 7. I Wish I Knew How it Would Feel to Be Free 8. Why Don't You Do Right (Get Me Some Money Too) 9. Fever 10. I'll Be Seeing You

When it should've been her first elimination!

Catching up on the results and y'all did THE Peggy Lee so dirty. She can put more personality into a single word than most of these other girls did across all 8 songs (Nina excluded, of course. Mostly looking at you, Sarah Vaughn). Forgot to include HM's but if I did it would've been for this experimental bop.

Haven't really been on ATRL much in years, but when I heard about this rate I knew I had to participate. Looove Peggy, Julie, and (especially) Nina. Not as familiar with the other ladies but excited to get into them. Most of my Nina favorites didn't make the cut though so I'll post them in here the next couple weeks starting with this:
-
St. Vincent - 'All Born Screaming'
is the instrumental in this clip from the 2nd half of Hell is Near?
-
St. Vincent - 'All Born Screaming'
what do you think of the album overall? would you say itโs one her best?
