Was given a proper pop treatment and had been planned better commercially? 
 

There's 14 songs and some dilute the track list quality. It's one of Avrils best albums but it could have been planned better. Tracklist:

The album would have been better received, flowed better, more commercially viable and single releases would have worked better.

Sorry but only lead single that works is (Push) I love you is not lead material. 
 

She did not want What the hell on the album. RCA forced her to put more commercial songs on it but honestly this is her 3rd best album. 
 

Black Star, Not Enough & Goodbye must be on the album & are not filter you ok?

I Love You is absolutely lead single material. It fit into that Bruno Mars (just the way you are) mid tempo sop of 2011. Avril also admitted herself that a song that should have been a single in her career is 'I Love You'. The fact you think Push could have been a single at all while Evan Taubenfelds horrible vocals were on it - says everything I need to know about your taste.

I Love You as a lead would've fit the early 2010s scene pretty well. I know it was out of her control but them trying for Girlfriend 2.0 with WTH 4 whole years later was not the move. There's so many gems on this album that scream YouTube lyric video hit. 

I Love You might have worked as a lead (even though I'm not very fond of it) and I guess it's more in line with the more vulnerable image she wanted to have with GL, not to mention the label was going to make sure one of the Max songs was the lead. I do always wonder about songs like Gone and Complete Me though because, if the instrumentals are in fact real, I do think they had potential to be stronger album cuts than songs like 4 Real, Darlin etc. but instead they seemed to make her include the Max songs and Alice which take up a good chunk of the album and kind of changed the vision she had for it.

I don't mind Alice on the Album. The extended Version fits the album and Style.

Goodbye Lullaby might just be my favourite Avril Lavigne album, but it is very clear the hold Sony RCA had on it at the time of its release. And while she may not have liked "What the Hell", it was a considerable success. However, Lavigne falls into that unfortunate category of artists who released albums in the mid-to-late 2000s that people seem to latch onto and what the immediate copy-paste follow-up to (2007's The Best Damn Thing). In my opinion, Sony Epic's selection of "Here's to Never Growing Up" from 2013's self-titled release was more in line with "Girlfriend" than the former ever was.

 

"I Love You" certainly would have been a change of pace as a lead single from the album (and had it been released when it was supposed to be in April 2010, with the album to follow that June). It reminds me of Alanis Morissette vibes, evoking a distinctly 1990s vibe. But @Appletree is right: I believe that "Push" would have been a more suitable lead single than "I Love You", as it possesses an easy-breezy, spring-to-summer vibe. I can easily envision people listening to it during summer trips to the beach.

 

As for the full 14 tracks (not counting the deluxe edition bonuses), I do not see anything wrong with the original track listing.

Also not you removing 4 Real when it was literally self-written AND self-produced !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

She was originally gonna release the album in the fall of 2009 and I think that alone would have helped it a lot. Long gaps between albums just don't work for some artists, even then. 

if Goodbye and 4 Real wasn't on the album Avril would've probably kill someone on RCA 

 

 

Sadly I don't think anything on this album could have smashed. It is tied as my fave Avril album with UMS, but it suffers from lack of single material. 

 

What the hell was the right single but they should have pushed it harder on radio, people clearly like the song, it is among the top 100 most streamed songs released in 2011.  

I Love You and Everybody Hurts lacked punch imo, but ILY kinda had potential however I think Remember When could have been a solid second single but there's also WYWH which was a possible hit, it debuted on the hot 100 when the album was released maybe they didn't invest on radio causing it to flop.

 

So my options would be...

 

1. WTH

2. WYWH

3. ILY

4. EH

5. RW

Black Star is cute tour interlude but that's it, Stop Standing There is annoying, I Love You sounds like it was made for a disney show and Darlin sounds like a demo

Keep everything and add Dancing Crazy, Complete Me, Gone, scrapped clean version of WYWH for an anniversary edition

What The Hell screamed lead single. This and Smile were the obvious singles and Wish You Were Here is one of the strongest ballads of her career. All in all, these were good choices and the album did well.

 

I love Goodbye Lullaby, it's my favourite Avril album, but god knows lovey dovey midtempos like I Love You would have made zero noise compared to What The Hell.

Based on what Google says, GL was recorded until October 2010 and Avril started to record AL in November 2011 so yeah she probably already wrote most of the AL tracks before GL was even released 

I Love You is part of the 2010 sessions so had the album came out in 2009 like Avril intended, our lead single contenders are:

 

Push

Not Enough

4 Real

Everybody Hurts

I love that album the way it is tbh, including WTH
