I agree all my faves are examples of wasted potential, especially Britney. Without personal turmoil she would be unquestionably HUGE. To heights her peers would never reach just like she was in the early 2000s. She already reached the summit, she only needed to maintain that but it was never her priority.

 

At the same time, probably that very same turmoil is what made her seek such an unconventional path from an early age so maybe it's no use bringing it up though.

I know she's not necessarily "wasted" but I think Avril should have squeezed one more post-grunge album (or maybe something in the vein of Evanescence) to get some real critical acclaim before going the sell-out route with Girlfriend.

 

Ashlee Simpson has some seriously good music for how unheard of she is these days.

 

And Holly Valance's second (and for some reason last) album is really solid.

The Best Damn Thing is literally her most " heavy " sonically wise album .

I think UMS was her peak in terms of heaviness/non-radio-friendliness.

Janet's legacy is intact. Yes, she had a decline in commercial popularity but her impact is undeniable and she was a superstar for several albums/eras. I'm just saying the OP's question is not relevant to her when there are dozens of other artists to identify that meet that criteria
