It probably has been like 15 years since I last listened to music with cassettes. Maybe I should buy some cassettes to remember the old times:bird:

bought a few mint sealed Cassettes originally released in 1989 and 1992 and the two 1989 releases look to be in some point of degradation. the tapes are turning white/grey. and the sound comes in and out at parts

That's very interesting.

i have a couple of tape players i keep running, a hifi one i got for about 60 quid a couple of years back and a walkman i've had sat about since about 2009 that i got just before they stopped making them.

i have a bunch of old tapes (some i owned, some donated to me by people chucking stuff out.  my take is that 90s tapes either sound great or they go wobbly and unplayable, not much inbetween. 70s/80s tapes are often bad, esp 70s tapes which leave brown gunk all over yr tape heads.

new tapes are also not very good, i'll buy one every so often if i see them very cheap but they're mainly just for the collectors market and some are absolutely dire, last one i got was rina 'hold the girl' which if i play it on headphones you can hear a little click in the quiet bits everytime the wheels go around (cost me two quid but is indicative of quality in general)

i like to play them tho! i got the first tate mcrae album on tape for £4 earlier this year and it greatly increased my appreciation of the album!

turns out, despite the white stuff, its not the tapes. i just had to replace the batteries in my portable player and they play fine.

What a great idea for a thread :heart2:

I have to say I haven't listened to music on cassette in about 15 years (I haven't had a player since) but it's the format that made me a fan of physical releases so I'll always have a soft spot for them, and seeing them making a comeback fills me with joy. I usually still pick up cassettes formats of albums I really want to support.

So there was no degradation? They're perfectly fine after all these years? :gaycat6:

it's variable but they definitely get ropier the further you go back. i've got a few really good 90s ones tho, reissues of joni mitchell blue and the beatles revolver, and orbital in sides are really good, haven't deteriorated at all.

re new tapes, some are def better than others but the best i've found (the aforementioned tate tape, the last florence and the machine album) were very listenable but weren't really cd quality, they have funny little patches of distortion in them. otoh some have just sucked, i got wednesday "twin plagues" and it sounded genuinely horrible

i didnt know whether it was degradation or just mold lol

another perfect almost true-to-digital sounding cassette is Billie Eilish - Happier Than Ever (i have the grey version)! Oxytocin is so beautiful in this format.

I've been wanting to start a little cassette collection and even make my own customs but I always end up busy with something else :jonny2: maybe this will motivate me to finally purchase that Indonesian copy of GGGB
