ATRL Moderator supaspaz Posted May 12 Author ATRL Moderator Posted May 12 That means it comes down to "Alright" vs. "Bad Idea Right?" Who is taking it?

ATRL Moderator supaspaz Posted May 12 Author ATRL Moderator Posted May 12 ALRIGHT Average: 8.26 High Score: 10 (@supaspaz, @kandicha, @MP2K, @Reverie) Low score: 6 (@a_d_22, @4Real, @Achilles.) A highlight of Jaguar II, the dance floor futurism of “Alright,” courtesy of producer Kaytranada, also stands out among the album’s retro R&B soundscape. Perhaps that’s what distinguished this smoldering bounce – the manifesto of a wordplay-loving, monogamy-shunning bad bitch – with voters, propelling it above every other Victoria Monét track in the rate. Best bit: “Thought you was about to get some foreplay with me?/Won't even get a picture of these 4K titties” ATRL says…: “First mid song of the record but still not bad,” @a_d_22 shrugged.

glitch Posted May 12 Posted May 12 "He gave me some dick in bed now he think his dick is embedded" is peak songwriting!

I love it, but I feel bad every time I pick the opening line of a song as the best bit. Like, is it really all downhill from the start? Also, I do think the 4k titties line outsold slightly.

ATRL Moderator supaspaz Posted May 12 Author ATRL Moderator Posted May 12 BAD IDEA RIGHT? Average: 8.28 High Score: 10 (@supaspaz, @Quicksand, @Ewan Chaos, @Ace Reject, @Born to Run) Low score: 3 (@Suilen) Isn’t it nice when a rate ends with a satisfying winner – an underrated track that doesn’t feel like a foregone conclusion but is nevertheless entirely deserving? This raunchy singsong patter, in which Olivia Rodrigo drunkenly convinces herself to make poor choices with an ex, was overlooked upon release last summer as the second single from Guts, peaking at #7 on the Billboard Hot 100 and quickly fading, so it feels like sweet vindication for it to take the crown. I almost want to blame Gen Z’s squeamishness about sex for audiences not clicking with a song so utterly charming, so totally rocking, so far too relatable. After all, critics from Time, The Guardian, The New York Times, NME and NPR named it among the best of the year. But if this was 2023, then maybe the kids are all right. Best bit: “I only see him as a friend/I just tripped and fell into his bed” ATRL says…: This rate was @a_d_22’s “first listen to Guts and it’s honestly better than I was expecting.” I’ll let @Ewan Chaos take us out: “The way I assumed she'd peaked with ‘Good 4 U’ and she blew me out of the water with this one. The way she actually sounds confident and not weird saying fuck, the lyrics (I just tripped and fell into his bed!), the sass, the BANGER of a chorus, and of course her actually STOPPING the song when she says that she should stop.”
glitch Posted May 12 Posted May 12 This is definitely one of those "you're not gonna get it the first time" type of songs and I think a lot of people only listened the once and checked out.
kandicha Posted May 12 Posted May 12 Deserving winner! it's a bop that I still haven't gotten bored or tired of almost a year later.

I really don't get it, because it's hooky, it's funny, it's got that funky bass riff. And I wouldn't call its sound trendy, but don't the kids like that lo-fi vibe? Very disappointing to see it flop.
ATRL Moderator supaspaz Posted May 12 Author ATRL Moderator Posted May 12 That concludes This Was 2023. I know it was a struggle at times, but we made it! Thank you so much to everyone who voted and participated in this thread. I still had fun because of you! See you again next year (for Cowboy Carter vs. The Tortured Poets Department?). 1

Suilen Posted May 13 Posted May 13 9 minutes ago, supaspaz said: Why don't you like BIR? I can acknowledge that it's catchy but it's kinda in the same territory as her foremother's Shake It Off, which is another attempt at recreating Hey Mickey, and both couldn't touch the original (though Olivia's is slightly more interesting).

Olivia's highest rated song after Vampire of course. I have seen BIR win over Vampire before so no surprise. Thanks for doing such a good job hosting and I hope to actually participate next year. 1
