The EBU supports independent media, and had to respond when the Belarusian government attacked press freedom via their arbitrary arrest of an independent journalist. This led to the expulsion of Belarus from the EBU, preventing them from participating in future editions of Eurovision.

 

All of that is in addition to BTRC being the media propaganda arm of Lukashenko's government, which attacked and condemned the mass protests that took place against the government in 2021. The same government broadcaster concurrently submitted two pro-government songs that specifically belittled and demonized the protestors, culminating in their refusal to submit a third song/rewrite when given the option to. Mind you, Belarus' broadcaster announced immediately after this interview aired that Val were disqualified from representing Belarus in 2021 because they "don't have a conscience.”

KAN is the Israeli public broadcaster, and reports on news relevant to Israel, including the war. I agree that reporting on signing rockets is distasteful, but it's not an exclusively Israeli thing… for example, there were fundraisers in Ukraine allowing people to pay for messages to be written on missiles used to attack Russian soldiers. Azerbaijan and Armenia constantly push "propaganda" meant to villainize the other side. There are countries at war, countries that have political disputes, and their media reflects that. Holding Israel to one standard that's different from everyone else is a slippery slope.

 

Ultimately, KAN is independent of the government, and was actually targeted by Netanyahu for its reporting. The difference with Belarus is that their government didn't accurately reflect the situation on the ground, and aggressively worked for the government rather than the people. The EBU has said from the beginning that none of their rules have been violated by KAN, but the fanbase has collectively put its head in the sand and decided that there is some deeper conspiracy that doesn't actually exist.

 

That being said, I think people are more than welcome to protest Israel's participation in the contest. But I agree with the EBU message that bullying artists (among other insidious posts I've seen online, such as hoping for a terrorist attack in Malmö) crosses the line into harassment territory, and should stop

The rules remain identical to previous editions. First, you will choose your 10 favorite songs from each semi-final. In typical ESC fashion, your #1 song gets 12 points, #2 gets 10 points, #3 gets 8 points and so on until weyreach your #10 that gets only 1 point.
