Madonna (50) had been around for 25 years by that point. Gaga (22) was a fad who's sales trajectory plummeted with every solo album.

I can't wait to see what she'll be doing at 50 if she continues down the path she is. :rip:

Considering she’s beloved by the GP for her legendary pop discography and iconic fashion statements and not forgotten and despised like Madonna is :rip:

The 11th studio album done by the 50 year old pop singer with a 25 year old career.

No one cares about most of born this way (album) and no one cares for anything on artpop...stop talking as if most of Gaga's eras are well remembered. Even Joanne only has Million Reasons and she had to perform it in every place possible...the first single is forgotten as well :deadbanana4:

Gaga peaked on her first era and has a soundtrack keeping her streaming numbers afloat. And is still being oustreamed by someone like Katy Perry that had her last hit like 9 years ago :deadbanana4:

Hard Candy virtually made top 30 year end on every international chart

4 Minutes was also massive

Hard Candy was objectively bigger. 6M units vs 3M for Chromatica. 4 Minutes was a bigger hit than Stupid Love and Rain On Me put together. Tour comparison is not fair because Gaga is being a lazy heaux with like five dates total.

Why are people bringing up tour receipts? :rip: Madonna could have released 45 minutes of white noise and her tour still would have smashed. It has a weak relationship with the success of Hard Candy.

Ikr because you don’t need the tour to show Hard Candy was a much bigger era. It has twice the amount of units worldwide. Only in the US they are even with about 1.1-1.2m TEA+SPS units.

:ahh:

The only album the GP embraced was The Fame, and that was 14 years ago. If she was so beloved, then why did her popularity and sales plummet? Why did her solo #1 singles dry up after BTW?

Her fashion statements were nothing but a calculated move considering she didn't have anything else to make her stand out from the crowd (we've all seen Stefani Germanotta before Lady Gaga emerged). Her voice and girl next door image wasn't enough to capture the GP's attention, which is why the costumes were introduced.

ARTPOP and Joanne were huge failures for Gaga, and then she tumbled even further with Chromatica, which is interesting considering we were told ASIB was enough to guarantee a massive solo hit.:rip:

If Madonna's massive selling #1 albums and singles (including multiple OSTs) are forgotten, I very much doubt three flop studio albums in a row will be "remembered" 30 years from now.

OT. Hard Candy is still bigger

Hard Candy is a very interesting case study for a chart watcher. It's pretty much the only time that an act THAT far into their career was still competing head-to-head with the biggest new pop stars of the day on the charts with a very commercial and current/trendy sound. The era functioned more like what a new Xtina or Britney album would've performed like instead of a legacy act. Janet and Mariah's albums released that year ended up doing a fraction of its WW units, for comparison.

She sold 3.8 million albums, and an additional 600k through video and box set compilations, as well as the very successful live tour DVD, almost 9 million digital singles which was very good for an era with essentially only two promoted singles, and it's done OK through streaming with almost 350k equivalent units. At the time of its release, "4 Minutes" was one of the highest-viewed videos ever on YouTube, but most of the early versions were deleted after the transition to VEVO and then Madonna's official account, which obscures this fact.

She felt 'current' for the last time IMO, with "4 Minutes" being an immediate radio smash with its super distinctive marching band riff. I remember thinking it was a sample like Hung Up because it was so catchy.

Good question, @Jjang! I'd say Madonna's 11th studio album is objectively bigger than half of Gaga's discography :1stplace:

Hard Candy - 6,052,000

ARTPOP - 4,528,000

Cheek To Cheek - 1,776,000

Joanne - 3,226,000

Chromatica - 3,109,000

Bonus: The Hard Candy tour was also a MASSIVE success :1stplace:

Sticky & Sweet Tour - $519M

Monster Ball - $273M

Born This Way Ball - $213M

ARTPOP Ball - $83M

Joanne - $94M

Enigma - $79M

Not gonna lie, I was shocked to find out Gaga hasn't scored a multiplatinum studio album anywhere in the world since 2011. I think that really puts into perspective how successful Hard Candy actually was!.

Well when you put it like this... :rip:

Hard Candy by a mile! :clap3:

Hard Candy is the bigger and better album. Chromatica basically died the week after it was released.

There must be two GPs then.

HC, but almost any big pop album from the 2000's will be bigger than most pop albums after 2013/2014 when pop as a genre started to nosedive.  Not really fair to compare the two and no easy way to adjust current sales to match pre-2010's sales.  Only Taylor has been able to weather the downfall of pop to some extent, otherwise, everyone else has failed to reach 2000's numbers.
