AC is playing it again?

Yep, AC stations switched up again with their usual playlists, huge gains for EOM, Levitating, BH, K&Q, The Weeknd and Lewis Capaldi.

EOMs update

EOM is such a smash.

That longevity

Yes I agree. It may rebound, I noticed a bunch of stations playing Woman this week, so maybe it’s just that.

Today on work radio, I plugged in my phone on the iHeartRadio app to KIIS 102.7 and it was so nice to NOT hear Alessia Cara- Sweet Dreams on power, and instead hearing Happier than Ever and Need To Know nonstop. It was amazing ?

I feel Doja is too explicit for Canadians maybe.

A legendary radio station for a reason.

Try KDWB-FM, that's my favorite, and they stanned hard for classic in the making "you broke me first".  (In fact it was their most played song of the year).

Yeah Levitating gets a strong EOY bounce.

Canadians

From what I gather Canada's stations allow language that can't be said here in the US. The US actually censors MORE explicit lyrics than other countries, not less. Just like US drinking age/nudity/cannabis laws are all more repressed than the rest of the world.

EDIT: Cannabis is semi-legal in states but not the federal level. Many countries have made progress toward full marijuana legalization at the federal levels. Technically even medical marijuana remains illegal at the fed level in the US, despite Biden's (broken) promise to change this.

AC is playing it again?

Hello actually "peaked" in overall airplay, around 166 million on BB/222 million on MB, AFTER Christmas 2015-6 b/c AC stations switched to Christmas right as Hello soared everywhere else.

After Christmas, from what I remember before Kworb had to delete the data, Hello actually set AC audience records. But that boost was muted a bit because the other genres had slowly begun decreasing their radio support.

Had all its airplay peaked around the same time, Hello probably would've reached 185-190 million on BB/245-250 million max on MB AI. These numbers just annoy y'all but in perspective that's about Uptown Funk's peak. No later songs got UF level audience after its peak & no later songs reached Hello's impressions after its peak.

I guess like with sales Uptown Funk & Hello were pretty much the last of their times.  Blinding Lights peaked at around 115 million in BB & 160 million on MB AI and nothing's come close since it.

I don't see Pop radio listenership going back to previous years. Sure, Miss Rona did its thing impacting pretty hard on overall radio, but its trend was to be slowly decreasing. Can't honestly blame listeners, radio has been quite messy these last years in how to program their playlists. There are some random picks and decisions that honestly don't make sense to me. It's what you get when you ignore callouts more and more tbh.

I know, I find it weird that yet explicit songs (more Urban-leaning) get more plays on US Radio. Examples like: Need to Know, Up (Cardi B), Best Friend come to mind. It's not that necessarily they should be equivalently likeable to Canadian audience, but at least NTK and Up did pretty good on consumption on other metrics, while Canadian Pop radio show resistance towards them.

As a Canadian who listens to Canadian radio all day everyday, this is not true. We have censor laws, and they seem stricter than US. For example in Dua's Love Again, the "God Damn" is completely blanked out, and theres just an awkward silence. Also, even though Cannabis is legal here, they block out any reference too it, like in Alessia Cara's Here, "Somewhere in the corner under clouds of marijuana" the word marijuana is blanked out even though it's not even a curse word.

This I agree with. Canadian radio is definitely more resistant to hip-hop on pop. Which is unfortunate. They seem to prefer dance hits(not as much as Europe but more than US).

I think it may be because Canada has less black history when compared to the US, and a smaller African population as well. But still these songs are HITS!!

I feel Doja is too explicit for Canadians maybe.

A legendary radio station for a reason.

Try KDWB-FM, that's my favorite, and they stanned hard for classic in the making "you broke me first".  (In fact it was their most played song of the year).

I will try that one! Are they on the iHeartRadio app?

As a Canadian who listens to Canadian radio all day everyday, this is not true. We have censor laws, and they seem stricter than US. For example in Dua's Love Again, the "G D" is completely blanked out, and theres just an awkward silence. Also, even though Cannabis is legal here, they block out any reference too it, like in Alessia Cara's Here, "Somewhere in the corner under clouds of marijuana" the word marijuana is blanked out even though it's not even a curse word.

Well Kid LAROI's Fuck Love obviously no biggie in Australia. I almost moved there so I have an idea of what's OK down there. Since Canada obviously has freedoms not found in the US I assumed that songs faced less censorship there. Also I had heard that Canada aired Blink 182s "What's My Age Again" air uncensored at night.

FTR I'm 1 of the people who feel more offended by/when hearing G D than anything else out there.....fuck, shit, even cun.t rolls of like water on a ducks back. But G D makes the hair on the back of neck stands straight out. And my friends know this & I'll jump all over them for saying it near me.

@JGibson 1 day last week Easy On Me reached 10 charted formats! Do you know which genres? I know CHR, AC, HAC (& Adult Hits), Rhythmic, Rhythmic AC, AAA, Urban AC & Country but that leaves 2. What are the others, Latin, Alternative, Jazz, or another I can't remember.

I will try that one! Are they on the iHeartRadio app?

Yes, that's the app I use to listen to radio.

Happy New Year!
