The Bieber song is a bit underwhelming, I love him and his last album so much and this is fine... but not more.

Agreed. I'm no Bieber stan but I did love Purpose and thought it was very musically interesting. But this new song is straight generic pop. I am VERY curious to see if they can turn this into a hit because it just doesn't sound like a smash to me. None of the hooks are strong enough.

"Friends" is actually nice. But I don't see it blocking "Despacito". I guess we'll see.

Lol. Sam Hunt played football at (one of ) my Alma Mater(s), The University of Alabama at Birmingham. His wife attended Montevallo, from where my Mom received her Bachelor's degree. Montevallo is just south of Birmingham, AL, my hometown. So those are the reasons I pull for him. I'm not a "stan" though, just a fan.

I wonder if Biebers team purposely debuted the song on Thursday so it can't block Despecito this week. Is that a valid speculation?

I don't think so. Artist are releasing songs on Thursday to get publicity because on friday there's many songs, and on Thur usally there's one song and it is topic of the day. also longevity - there's no big second week drop, more like third week. it's stupid but they keep doing that.

 

and bieber song is another edm song, nothing new, nothing fresh, I think despacito is safe

people keep saying this, but justin tweeted (and deleted) something saying the song was coming out Friday. they changed the date. it WAS this link https://twitter.com/justinbieber/status/896859546244718592

thats what I think they did because he tweeted "Friday" then deleted
