i don't think the life of a showgirl is a bad album and there are a lot of gems on it, but i do agree that it wasn't up to her usual standard. it also didn't help that it followed the tortured poets department which had incredible songs like "clara bow," "the albatross," "chloe or sam or sophia or marcus," "how did it end?" and "so high school," and that's just to name a few. that album was packed with goodness. the highs on the life of a showgirl just couldn't quite reach the same heights.

as a woman, i'm often not comfortable around straight men or being alone in public, especially at night because i'm genuinely afraid of what they might say or do to me. a lot of that fear is shared between women and gay men tbh. there's that ridiculous idea that women are "asking for it" if they dress a certain way and i know a lot of gay men feel the same way if they choose to dress more flamboyantly. it's like they're somehow putting an unfair target on their backs and making themselves more likely to be harassed or potentially attacked in public. a lot of gay men i've spoken to feel like they have to act more "straight" in public because they're afraid of how people might treat them. there's definitely a lot of overlap between being gay and being a woman in terms of how you're treated by society. 🤷🏼‍♀️

there are definitely girls out there who treat gay men like that and i agree that it's incredibly cringe to want someone to be your friend simply because they're gay. but i don't think it's entirely fair to say that every friendship between a gay man and a girl is like that. honestly, i think some of the most genuine friendships are between gay men and girls. a lot of gay men who get bullied or harassed in school are usually targeted by straight guys, so it's not surprising that they might not feel comfortable around straight men in general. it's also usually the girls in school who defend them, befriend them and give them a space where they can actually be themselves. my best friend jackson and i have been friends since we were around 7 years old. we're both 21 now and i genuinely can't imagine my life without him. i love my girlfriends too, but the bond i have with him is just different. i love that we can be flirty and playful with each other without there ever being a risk of it becoming sexual or weird, because we're just not attracted to each other like that. there are certain things you can do and say around a gay man that you can't necessarily do with other girls, at least in my experience. some girls can be extremely petty and bitter toward other girls, whereas jackson always knows exactly what to say to make me feel like the most beautiful girl in the world. he also always comes to me first for advice about pretty much anything and everything. i just feel like we balance each other out, and i think that's a big part of why we've stayed so close for all these years. at this point, we're basically family.

"clara bow" is another stunning song! in complete honesty, the tortured poets department is one of my favorite albums from her. i legit almost started crying when she announced the anthology. we were well and truly fed during that era. tbh, even her "worst" is better than a lot of people's "best" and that just shows how good she really is!

the thought of being so close to hearing "mary's song (oh my my my)" + "tied together with a smile" + "should've said no" with her modern vocals and new instrumentals omg aodbsiabshajaj!!!!!

idk if it's just me but if i had to sit and seriously consider what my top twenty taylor songs looks like, this is most likely getting a spot.

hey everyone! i'm paige, i'm 21 years old and i was born and raised in seattle. she/her pronouns :) i listen to a lot of niche artists and bands, but my absolute queens of life are hayley williams + taylor swift, so you'll probably see me in basically every thread involving either of them lol other than listening to music, i'm really into photography, road trips with my friends and fitness.

i'm so ready for whatever it is. i wouldn't mind a deluxe edition of the life of a showgirl tbh. i know it's not her best album by any means, but it's definitely not as bad as some people try to make it out to be. i still listen to it quite a lot.

i've been listening to the tortured poets department a lot lately and i forgot how much i love "chloe or sam or sophia or marcus" this album + red + folklore + evermore are essential listens for me once fall rolls around.

outside of my favorite artists, i don't really find a lot of these newer artists interesting. they're either a carbon copy of people who came before them or they're incredibly generic. i often find myself actively looking for new artists on spotify and purposely seeking out more unheard-of and niche music because that's where you actually find the goldmine these days. this seems to be affecting every industry, though, as hollywood is mostly just remakes or sequels, and it's rare that we get an original and exciting concept. i used to go to the movie theater almost weekly, and now it can be once every couple of months because most movies are just like… meh, or they seem like something i'll just wait to watch when they're on streaming. my mom even mentioned to me quite recently that she's noticed i don't go to the movie theater much anymore. there are still some fresh and fun ideas coming out, but for the most part, pop culture peaked a long time ago. it's probably why so many old songs go viral nowadays.
