I couldn't believe ATRL doesn't have a thread to discuss the most brilliant musician we've ever seen so thought it's about time he had a base thread!

 

What are everyone's favourite Prince albums and songs?

 

My fave albums are Sign 'O' The Times, 1999, Purple Rain, Lovesexy, Diamonds And Pearls, Love Symbol Album, Prince, The Gold Experience. So many. A brilliant discography.

 

What do yall want the estate to release next? I want the Camille album desperately. Yes ik the songs are all out across different releases but I want the album the way it was intended with the original mixes.

Oooh I haven't thought about a Come SDE but that would be great. I've seen some fans saying they think we'll get a Purple Rain SDE this year but that's looking unlikely atp. I've read that Parade and Love Symbol Album SDEs have already been prepared so hopefully they see the light of day. There's so many possibilities. A double set for Lovesexy/The Black Album would be fantastic.

Chii  2024 was supposed to be all about Purple Rain. Not them making us wait a whole damn year extra. Who celebrates a 41 year anniversary.

I've been working my way through his discography over the past few months (albeit very slowly) and am really enjoying it. I'm only up to Chaos and Disorder right now because I'm trying to take my time with each album and read up on the historical context of each. I always heard his hits growing up but I am amazed at just how insane and uncompromising of an artist he was. I think the word is thrown around a little loosely in music circles but "genius" really does apply to Prince IMO.

 

I think my favorite album of his right now is Lovesexy. I love the maximalism and pure funk of it, and the context behind it following up the darkness of The Black Album is also super interesting too. Anna Stesia, Lovesexy, and Positivity are some of my favorite Prince tracks so far.

Lovesexy is indeed amazing, coming after Parade and Sign... he was unstoppable in the 80s lol.

 

I think the last-minute pulling of The Black Album and the bootlegging scene gave that album a huge reputation, a lot of it at the expense of Lovesexy, but time has been a lot kinder to Love imo.

I think what makes his 80s albums even more amazing is that they're all so different from each other. I wasn't alive then lol but from what I've read after Purple Rain the GP were expecting Purple Rain 2.0 from the next album and were disappointed when it wasn't. But I'm so glad ATWIAD was completely different. And then he completely switched it up again for Parade. The versatility. 

Sad news. Tyka has passed away.

 

She was the last surviving member of their family after their parents and Prince passed away. The end of an era. They're all back together now.
