Oktober Knight Posted March 3, 2023 Posted March 3, 2023 I was just admitted to study abroad in Heidelberg, Germany this summer but I know nothing about the town or much about Germany in general. Are there any tips on places to go for food, drinks, and shopping? How is the LGBTQ scene there? Also, any advice on how much to bring for expenses for 3 weeks? Lastly, are there any phrases I should learn in German to minimize the language barrier? Any tips are highly appreciated!
HEAVYONIT Posted March 3, 2023 Posted March 3, 2023 It's a really big university city so you'll definitely have plenty of young people to meet, from Germany and other students from Europe doing ERASMUS. I went 6 years ago and it's a nice city. I went for the Christmas markets, which are sooooo awesome, so I was only there a few days and didn't really go "out" per say.

I did hear from a colleague that the shopping there is insane and apparently everything is cheap (?).

In general things are way cheaper there than in the US because the cost of living is significantly lower.

ariananext Posted March 3, 2023 Posted March 3, 2023 My brother goes there often for business reasons, he says it's a great place and I loved the pictures he sent. Germany is such a great country in my opinion.
zuper Posted March 3, 2023 Posted March 3, 2023 My sister studied there for a few years and it's a beautiful university city with an old town, castle, many pubs and bars. The most of them are in the city centre so you can just walk by. You have all common shopping stores, many restaurants and great nature for hiking ( and even Ed Sheeran said, that Heidelberg is his favourite German City). But don't expect huge clubs or raves etc, therefore you can hop on the train and go Frankfurt in like 45 min or visit Mannheim (nearest city but not as beautiful). The LGBTQ-Community is normal for a university city. As many students live there during the study, Grindr or the few gay bars are crowded. Your expenses depends on how much you want to eat outside. A diner in a restaurant is like average 25 €, drinks in a bar normally cost between 5 - 10 € and entry fees are also like like 10 € for museums etc. Summer in Heidelberg is amazing, you will love it if you like old and small cities

MonsterJohn Posted March 3, 2023 Posted March 3, 2023 it's a very beautiful small merdival city, calm and quiet. I enjoy it alot But are you black though? They are quite rural so not sure if they would be racist in general
