Are collabs still just transactional?

Featured Replies

Or are they finally becoming more organic??

Like for example Ariana and The Weeknd. They seem to have a nice relationship outside of just collaborating, and when they do collab it doesn’t feel like a move from their label.

as opposed to let’s say, all the Katy remixes from back in the day, S&M with Britney, or I guess even recently ******* Bebe Rexha and Doja Cat

:giraffe:

There have always been transactional collabs and organic ones. I don't think one is replacing the other.

I would say Gaga was a more organic one.

Ariana had nothing to gain from collaborating with Lady Gaga for Rain on Me. She was far from the star Ariana was in 2020, I would say that was organic and they definitely had a strong connection.

I think with Ariana, she just genuinely loves to collab with artists she admires.

This, reason why many of her collabs are with less known or less successful artists: Troye Sivan, Social House, Normani, Cashmere Cat, and even The Weeknd in 2014, who got his first Top 10 with Love Me Harder.
