When it was released, most people were disappointed how quickly he killed After Hours hype

 

But years later, the album still stays in Top 20 of BB200, thanks to Blinding Lights and Save Your Tears longevity, and Die For You's resurgece

 

Knowing that he is not a huge album seller like Adele or Taylor who has longevity on album chart, this greatest hit albums gather all the powers from his albums and become a supreme on BB200

 

Like at this point, I can see this album being one of the longest charting album at BB200 at one point. I mean, as long as people stream his biggest hits, The Highlights will suck the power from his previous album's biggest hits

I am happy that a compilation album is doing great during the streaming era.

But that's how BB200 rules change benefits compilation/Greatest Hits albums

 

If a song is in 2 albums, its stream will be counted in album which chart in higher position in BB200

So it means, Blinding Lights, Save Your Tears are not counted for AH

but counted for The Highlights

No it was a tragic move.

Imagine if Taylor pull something like this and ibstead of charting 9 albums per week, only 1 chart, just no. This messed up the data so bad.

 

I know you already mention that the weekend is not really an album artist and cannot chart 8-9 albums like Drake/Taylor but he can still chart 3/4 weekly compare to 1  like now 

Not at all, imo. He could've had multiple albums charting every week instead of a single compilation cannibalizing his discography.

it will end up being one of the biggest albums of all time whether he had 3 or 4 albums charting.  I'd rather have that personally.

He may not be a huge pure sales album seller (which he's still a decent seller at that especially compared to his peers) but his albums as a whole are very much consumed as entire bodies of work. Every song on Beauty Behind the Madness, Starboy and the My Dear Melancholy EP have over 100 million streams on Spotify. Every song on After Hours sans 1 interlude and the closing track also have over 100 million as well. 

 

iirc Starboy had never left the chart and Beauty Behind the Madness only left once briefly during the Christmas season of 2018... until the release of The Highlights. Even After Hours has fallen off the chart despite the insane longevity of its biggest hits. The Highlights has spent more weeks on the charts than After Hours, which hasn't passed 100 weeks yet because of it. Beauty Behind the Madness and Starboy would be at over 300 weeks charting by now too. If not for The Highlights, I'm sure After Hours would have made it to 300 weeks as well. When The Highlights temporarily fell off of the chart at the end of 2021 and stopped cannibalizing the streams from the other albums, all 3 re-charted before they all fell off again when The Highlights came back the following week.  

 

Obviously these chart statistics aren't hurting his bottom dollar or anything but it does stunt the insane longevity of his older work. 

no it was a disservice not to put the Save Your Tears Remix (feat. Ariana Grande) on the compilation and press it on vinyl. 

I personally hate it!!! After Hours album deserve a 200 weeks at Hot 100 not this album

 

 

Anyway.... Dawn FM surpass 1 million at the US organically

The album itself will do great but considering 3 things I say it’s not a good thing overall:

 

- Its goal was to be for new listeners following the super bowl, but that had a mediocre reception. In other words the streams are from people who already listened to him, his listeners didn’t jump up much after the super bowl hype. I don’t think he gained much fans from it. 

- It’s been proven repeatedly that compilation albums take away from overall album sales because instead of buying multiple albums with their fav songs they just go for the compilation. Bob Marley is a great example, one of the best selling artists when he died and his compilation album is still selling so well but all his classic albums have lost sooo much marketability as a result. The Weeknd is mostly a streaming act so this doesn’t hurt him as much. 
 

- For a generation of people they associate compilation albums with being washed up. Dawn FM did mid but i think he’ll survive it. But I hope he can still get hits as when u put out a greatest hits album they assume that means you don’t think you’ll get anymore. 
 

that said The Weeknd will be fine, I think it’s neither a success or failure. 

 

Not sure what all of the comments about him as an album seller are for. Basically all of his albums since BBTM would be charting on their own all this time later
