1998 longer audio interview from a restaurant. She never stopped saying he was part Venezuelan, but she discovered in the late 90s that he was Afro-Venezuelan - which is supported by immigration documentation Lambs found.

So everybody is like her father is Venezuelan and Black because they didn't know how to put me in that box,” Carey continued. “They want to put you in a box and categorize you. Right?”

 

She's been saying this since 2008.  I don't know how it changed from what she used to say (it was her paternal grandfather, he immigrated as a child by himself and changed his name when he did, he would tell her stories about growing up in Venezuela), but nothing about what she said makes her dad Venezuelan (he's American, that's nationality, not race) or afro-latino.  That's way to far back for Mariah to be claiming either.

I don't understand what point you're trying to make or negate. She did research on him in the late 90s and discovered that - while growing up in Venezuela - he was of primarily African descent. That doesn't negate people trying to fit her in a box or incessantly asking what ethnicity she was for thirty years.

Oh she already confirmed the Venezualan part of her family is black  So why does she say black AND Venezuelan like it was a different race lol

 

I think most of the confusion about her race is because she's white passing. Even though she doesn't see herself that way, most people  assumed she was white at first even her back up singers like Kelly Price had no idea until they became close friends.
