  5. We simply don't know that. Sales weren't tracked in the 80s during her peak. They were only tracked from her Erotica album onwards, at the point precisely where her appeal took a nosedive and was very hated on and didn't get big hits, so her first-week sales were bad. Ray of Light did hold the record for biggest female first-week sales for a few months in 1998. But of course this only reflected the SoundScan period from about 1991 onwards. That record was then broken twice more that year, first by Lauryn Hill and then by Alanis Morissette, and then again by Britney in 2000. It would then take 15 years for it to be broken again by Adele.

Yes, this is why Rihanna, who had zero musical talent back then, got signed to a major label that invested millions into her career (which makes this Scott Swift email look like absolute peanuts) before having ever performed live outside of a high school talent show, and was handed a guaranteed-smash debut single that was pushed up the charts with radio payola and was then given more guaranteed-smash singles for her subsequent album. She never had to learn how to write a song or perform an instrument, and was basically tone-deaf as a live performer for this entire time. Pretty privilege personified. Whereas Taylor had to do a **** ton of legwork herself, perform everywhere she could from the county fair to the Honey Boo pagent, spend a ton of her own family's money, and after writing hundreds of songs all she could get signed to was an independent label, and it took her over a year after her first album came out to get a real hit record. All while writing impeccable country pop and mastering playing the guitar. How the sausage is made indeed.
  9. Pls She was in high school with her friends, it was just a thing for fun, it wasn't anything close to a career yet. "Girl group" my ass. Read 'The Song Machine'. Rihanna was discovered as a teenager because of a friend of a friend situation, and then had a dream career handed to her in a silver platter. She didn't have to learn to write or produce or hustle at all. All the hustling was done by Carl Sturken and Evan Rogers, the producer duo who found her and workshopped her, found songs for her or wrote/produced them, and then presented her to labels with whom they already had a relationship with. They got her in the room with Jay-Z. She just had to stand there and look pretty and "perform" (we've all seen how bad she was back then). Then she got signed on the spot. Then she was put into the major label machinery full steam ahead with a smash debut single that got a **** ton of radio payola. She never had to hustle, never had to struggle using her own money not knowing where her career would go. She was in the major label star fast-track since she was a teenager. Complete BS to compare her trajectory to Nicki who actually had to WORK for years and years and is still lying about her age because of it.
  10. Somebody is trying to get secure a spot in the Supporting Actress Oscar race She's wrong, of course. It's not oversimplified feminism. It's oversimplified corporate white lady feminism. The film looks at corporate boards and then says "men have all the power, women are oppressed!". Meanwhile they ignore how the majority of homeless, imprisoned, suicides are men. They could've easily had a scene where Ken stumbles upon the hordes of barely-alive homeless men that litter Santa Monica beach, but wealthy white women like Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie would rather pretend those men did not exist. The existence of those endless hordes of drug addled, sore-ridden, barely-conscious homeless men across major cities in California complicate the simple feminist propaganda they wanted the film to impart. It would raise the issue of income and class and that's a no-no since Margot Robbie does NOT want to be called out as a hypocrite for pocketing $50 million from the movie after profit participation. No, much safer to make it a safe corporate white lady version of feminist. Don't dig too deep there either though, like most masters degrees going to women now, as well as the great majority of undergrad degrees (over 2/3), or that women under 35 now out-earn men under 35 on average. Because that would make America Ferrera's "stunning and brave" on-screen rant seem stupid, and then she wouldn't be in the race for Supporting Actress.
  11. I mean it's smart. All she has to do is lead vocals. She could do two songs a day, that's the whole album done in a week. Then if she changes her mind again they can tell her too bad and just release it since the label owns the masters and she's technically still under contract to RCA. They could re-use one of the Femme Fatale photos for artwork. They could even lie and tell her that it's just for fun and won't be released so she does it in the first place. That would be horrible and immoral, but Sony Music doesn't care about that, they care about Britney Spears making money for them again. There is LOTS of money to be made from Britney now that she's no longer under conservatorship. Much more than before, where it was endless red tape and it had to be split among all the conservators and their lawyers and such. Now she can be fully milked by the entertainment business. Book was just the beginning.
  12. It will happen. She loves the attention too much. Eventually the book will fade from the best-sellers charts and she will need something else to put her energy into again. She's been hard-wired to perform and record since she was a little girl.
