Sabrina Carpenter - 'Man's Best Friend'
i recognize your point but there's no way they didn't know espresso was gonna smash. they knew the meteoric rise was about to happen. they already had the singles planned out before espresso was even released. and island records had been struggling badly for a few years- being sued by artists for unpaid royalties, a significant decrease in market share, and a roster full of artists that weren't getting hits. they were absolutely confident that sabrina was about to smash with her era, otherwise i doubt they would've invested so much time, money, and risk into it. and it certainly paid off big time releasing "please please please" 2 months after espresso was a completely pre-planned and strategic move. that was when they solidified the summer of sabrina. now don't get me wrong, i LOVE manchild. not a day has gone by where it hasn't been on repeat. but the only "thing" they're watching it do is hit #1 (barely) and then drop out of the top 10 in 5 weeks. the budget of the music video alone tells you it didn't smash the way they wanted.

Sabrina Carpenter - 'Man's Best Friend'
i'm kinda flabbergasted as to why she didn't release the 2nd single today? lollapalooza is on tuesday. manchild flopped. she's launching this album with just thoughts & prayers. the SNS rollout was incredibly meticulous and handled beautifully. i guess MBF's first week will be an important indicator of whether or not the foundation she's brilliantly laid over the past 16 months is sustainable.

can she hurry up with the second single manchild was a cute little minor hit but it's about to leave the top 10 on the hot 100 and didn't have near the impact that the first 3 singles from SNS did

Sabrina Carpenter - "Manchild"
no it won't. she still has more tour dates and the netflix special coming soon. this is just a droplet between albums. like "honeymoon fades." it may end up on the new album or maybe even end up on a final reissue of SNS, but i'm all but certain we won't get an album until next year

Sabrina Carpenter - "Manchild"
i chuckled at myself earlier imagining a fake scenario where island records gave her video budgets for "bed chem" "juno" and "busy woman" and she combined them for "manchild" instead

Please Please Please | Turns 1
an incredible song from start to finish. one of the best produced pop songs in recent memory. a key change in a verse that shifts back into the original key at the chorus is psychotic and they made it work. the guitar picking, the ethereal outro, everything is *immaculate*

now that i've had the chance to blast this in the car, can confirm it's a god damn smash. jack did great on production, which i didn't realize before because he seems to produce music only made to be heard on the highest quality headphones only while sounding like **** on an average speaker. but now that i've had a chance to pay closer attention to the instrumental, i can say for maybe the 3rd time ever "good job jack." there's a reason why sabrina's newest music has garnered an intergenerational appeal. if she catered to everyone in this thread who hated it, she'd never have the success, grammys, and creative control. maybe one day y'all will "anti-hero" yourselves and realize maybe the fault is yours. lol

i think she smartly decided she didn't want to be stuck in the pop-indie bag and instead wanted to make music with a broader appeal with tons of references to her favorite artists of the past. eics is great but is generally very limited in its exploration and, with a few exceptions, is very musically...hmm...safe? even the producers from eics who still work with her now have upped their game for her. i think she didn't want to only have an audience who, for example, would hear this song and think "bleachers" instead of its actual references.

Sabrina Carpenter - "Manchild"
i think she realizes it would've been silly to stray too far from the SNS sound when the album is still a big hit globally and she's still touring it

Sabrina Carpenter - "Manchild"
as of right now it's just a song she wrote right after finishing SNS that she held onto so she could make it a summer droplet

Sabrina Carpenter - "Manchild"
the video is an homage to john fogerty's "the old man down the road." i'm kind of obsessed with how sabrina is always referencing referencing art + music that is way older than she is, which isn't a new thing of course but it speaks to her musical taste + knowledge that she references so many things that normally don't get referenced much by anyone, much less someone of her generation, like referencing goldie hawn at the grammys or referencing john fogerty with the manchild video. unfortunately that also comes with gen-z disliking certain songs and videos because it's beyond their scope

the collab/remix stuff is so played out to the point where artists just phone it in nowadays (like the yes, and? remix lol) she did it with dolly because duh, dolly. i'd rather have bonus tracks personally. the album is still performing great, no need to cheapen with remixes that, lets face it, rarely do anything significant for singles anymore

Sabrina Carpenter - "Manchild"
the "comeback hype?" you mean a mere 48 hours of people wondering if this was even a new single? she made it clear that this song lives in the SNS universe and is not a lead-in. i swear sometimes y'all log onto this forum thinking you're working A&R for the record label it's just a fun little track she saved for the summer instead of releasing it on the deluxe. and i guarantee she has a fall/winter song she's gonna drop as well to close out this era when the tour ends and netflix special releases. she won't release another album until spring 2026 at the earliest. bet on it.

Sabrina Carpenter - "Manchild"
kinda hilarious to me that manchild is an SNS song... the mental gymnastics that y'all performed to get from: "she shouldn't be ending the SNS era and starting a new one!" to: "she needs to move on from the SNS sound!" is truly baffling. calm down, stanchild. she has material ready for the next album and is still writing. she's slowly winding down the era for the rest of the year, she's on tour until november and i'm sure we'll get the netflix concert film in december and that'll be the end of it. y'all want her to release another single from the standard edition of a smash hit album where the singles + non-singles alike have already received incredible amounts of exposure, push, and virality, and that certainly is a...hmm...option. or she could continue dropping new-to-us content that still relates to the ongoing era at a killer pace (guarantee we'll get a late fall/winter drop as well). yeahhhh i think sabrina is making the right choice also, i'm not a big jack antonoff fan and i get why this 80's pop sound wouldn't be everyone's cup of tea, but i love this song. it would've sat comfortably with busy woman on the deluxe. as usual i have some...thoughts...on a few of jack's production choices. but he's *the* jack antonoff and i'm a person on a keyboard who just wrote waaaayyyy to long of a post, so i'll sit this one out. edit - also i just saw someone on here say PPP was badly produced and that right there is exactly why we're on ATRL and they're in the studio
