Billie Eilish drags artists releasing different vinyls for numbers and money

:keir:  Based on what Billie has said, I will expect her to not release any more physicals and if her label forces her to do so she will release only one eco-friendly version.  If her label forces variants (eco-friendly of course) she will sell them at cost because it would be greedy of her to make money on them (she has enough of that by the way) and the variants won't count for her charting numbers.

I am also challenging her and her team, where possible, to bicycle between her shows to cut down on her carbon footprint.

Also keep getting that Promo girl....lol

Umm, that is actually worse.  17 hours of streaming has the same carbon footprint of one vinyl record. If you cared about the environment you would use CDs.

What? Lol

One fanbase really seems to be triggered here.

Let's be honest, even if the vinyls are made from recycled material, it still generate waste and carbon emissions. If she really cares about the environment and sustainability that much, why not just stop physical all together? It seems like she also cares about chart and money just as much as any other popular artist, but her pr team advised her to say this just to green wash her brand :coffee2:

There is no zero carbon way to release music.

But least Billie is making an attempt to reduce the impact on the environment, even if she has also been part of the problem at times.

However, if you put fanbase wars aside, the real culprits are;

a) Billboard who prefer to count vinyl albums compared to other forms of delivery, even though we know that a large percentage of vinyl albums are not listened to by fans, they are just collectors items, especially when multiple versions/covers are sold. 50% of the buyers don't even own a vinyl record player.

If charts are meant to be a consumption metric, vinyl albums should count for half of other sales.

b) Record labels who are pushing these sales and lobbying Billboard to count these multiple versions of vinyl albums.

but does she fly commercial?

I'm sure we have had this subject come up before and from my understanding yes, Billie does fly commercial, as does Lorde and on some occasions Madonna has been seen taking commercial flights. Many others too I'm sure, but I didn't bookmark the thread. Despite what some people might tell you, this is quite common.

This is an example of how people get it wrong.

First of all, plastic production is bad for the environment for multiple reasons, not just carbon emissions. CDs are very bad, because the plastic and metal layers are bonded together, so they are very difficult to get recycled.

Plastic in the environment might fragment into smaller and smaller pieces, but it may never fully degrade.

The 17 hours of streaming number is just pulled out of the sky, because it depends on the country where the streaming server and streaming user is located. For many undeveloped/developing countries with less than 50% renewable energy in electricity production, streaming is worse than it would be for countries with 75-100% renewable energy. But this is a question for governments and energy generating companies, not something musicians can control.

The lowest impact is downloaded digital files.

Did Billie's vinyls have exclusive songs on them, making it so that you would have to buy all of them to get the "full" album or was it the same album, just different colors?

This was made before the other 2 editions of Tortured Poets were announced (and a few other new albums like Dua), but it covers her releases in recent years.

Hold the girl did not have 26 vinyl variants, according to Discogs it's 15 (still too many for that album)

but Red Hot Chili Peppers, Rolling Stones, Blink 182 all released an insane amount of variants as well and they are just left out here like many others as well.

this pictures focuses way too much on pop

there's a reason half of my fave's discography remains unpressed on vinyl, environmentally friendly eco-conscious queen :clap3:

She didn't even name any names yet one fanbase in particular felt attacked. One thing about them hit dogs.....

That's exactly the point she mentioned in the interview and people purposely missed it lol

I think the industry is kind of tired of Taylor...the audience's reaction when she announced her new album at the Grammy's kind of solidified that for me lol.

Realistically, who else could Billie really be talking about. Yes, there are many artists that do this, but Taylor has become the most known for it.

Some people in here are just... not smart, as expected. I wish you guys would actually look at the message she's trying to send instead of getting butthurt for people who were never even named. She's right and she should say it. Her releasing vinyls herself doesn't invalidate her point whatsoever, especially when she's one of the few arists who actually take the necessary steps to change the industry from how they distribute music to how they tour the world. No matter how you twist it, the nature of an artist's job is non-sustainable, however there are ways to make it more sustainable, which she takes. Just look at the stats for her Happier Than Ever World Tour. Maybe take your heads out of your faves' asses and see the bigger picture for once. :heart2:

She is right. I don't buy physical media. It's wasteful and takes up too much space imo. I prefer digital for everything. I haven't bought any physical media for years.

Not the defensive responses.

take a second for self reflection, and maybe you feel triggered because she's right and you know it.

She's right, but it's a major shame that she contributes to this problem.

It's reminding me a lot of Lorde's haughty talk about being anti-CD while selling plastic water bottles on her website.

:gaycat7: Sounds like Billie is trying to handicap those who got in line for those vinyl pressings before her....It's not their fault if you are late to the game girl.

She literally does the same thing. Recycled material or not.

I found it on Twitter so yeah I wasn't sure about the accuracy for that one, but I think most of them are correct.  Yeah I forgot about the RHCP variants, absolutely insane :rip:

I love an eco-conscious queen. The other girl just wants to see the world burn. How wasteful.
