Unfinished =/= bad. Was it a good idea for Dula to include an interlude in a short 11-track album where we had already heard 3 of the songs, 4 years after FN? No. But the song is super cute and the production makes me feel like a rich, French woman.

Honestly the fact AFL is so short is the only thing which is really pissing me off on the album, especially for the issue you said. Its been 4 years since FN and we already heard 3 out of 11 tracks before album was out, Im sure with some brainstorming and looking for creative ideas it could have been full 3+ minute song

AFL is okay. The horns are the catchiest part imo.

Has nothing to do with budget, songwriters and producers get paid the same for 2 minutes just as for 5 minutes,  the only thing which is additional cost os the studio rent time, and she had studio rented for months, they simple decided to release AFL as it is, and its weird and pity decision

It's true that the songs have class... this album makes me feel rich and sophisticated. Like I'm living out my dark academia preppy boy fantasies.

New Rules was her first No 1 in the UK. In the US, it bubbled around in the lower reaches of the Top 100 until it finally reached the Top 10 six months later. Her first album, simply titled Dua Lipa, was also a sleeper hit. She says this has become a pattern for her records in the US. "They don't go to No 1, but they stick around and they're around for a long time. And that's about patience. That's about just letting things do their thing; not forcing them."

The title of her new album, Radical Optimism, is another take on the need for patience. "It's about rolling with the uncertainties, being OK when things don't go your way, understanding that everything's for a specific reason. Patience is so important to me because there are moments that can be so frustrating and you can get stuck in a rut of like, 'Had I done this, maybe I would have been here.'

Maybe we should learn a thing or two from her...

But I gotta be honest, it is hard being optimistic when it feels like they don't know what to do with the era

Whenever I see anything abt this album I just get so disappointed , such a mismanaged era with bad decisions and laziness at every single turn , sigh I really hope she doesn't give up on this era and the label give her an ultimatum to find new management

who's gonna tell her to stop wearing these black jackets :rip: maybe she really thinks she gave us a psychdelic album instead of a summery one

Why tf she keeps on performing Happy for You when she should be puahing These Walls, if that fails then end the campaign and that's it.

I know a lot of her songs are growers, but it's been hard getting through this whole album in full for a first listen. An excruciatingly long 36 minutes I've had to break into multiple days because not even gym sessions made me want to listen to it. Which sucks because I really do love her music and think she has great taste and the songs are not bad. I just don't know if it works as a whole if that makes sense or if it's a worthy successor to her first two albums.

It sounds like a matured version of DL1 on SSRI's. I think the singles are probably the strongest songs apart from the middle of the album. I feel like she's not going to be discouraged though and just come out with something with a bit more bite in the next two years.

I wish some songs were longer and had more time to breathe, but it is my issue with many albums in years.

11 tracks is not an issue, for example I love American Life by Madonna, 11 tracks but it is almost 50 minutes...

Albums like that becomes "experience" rather than musical episode to fill half an hour

edit:

@mxoonlight I have opposite issue, the album is done too fast and you want more however not necessary repeat it again

I've listened a LOT over the last couple days, and I think as a front to back album, I enjoy this one more than FN. it doesn't have as high of highs, but it is generally more consistent and I love the production. Feels similar to, but still different enough from what she's done and what other pop artists are doing rn. It kinda feels like the love child of her first two albums.

She should've NEVER been so descriptive in describing the album's sound pre-release. I can hear the influences in some songs, but it's a Dua album first and psychedelic-inspired as like a tertiary component. in the current cultural moment, pop "eras" are expected to be specific artistic statements with specific, identifiable, dissectible sonic and lyrical touchpoints/references. Whether it's Ariana's or Taylor's life-specific lyrical details or Beyoncé's recent and very literal genre exercises, critics and fans are sort of expecting releases where the music is only one component of a larger discussion. RO is not that. It's a straightforward pop album with catchy, well produced, fresh sounding music, and regardless of how Dua maybe described it, it really isn't trying to be anything more than that. And I find it refreshing to have pop music that's just about the jams, not about the meta narrative.

Album as a whole is an 8/10 for me. Could've been longer, maybe lacks the smash hit(s) that FN had, but it's an album I keep wanting to return to. Sorry for the think piece. Too much coffee this morning

I can see that too, especially since she has so many songs that are 3+ minutes long and super dramatic production wise. :cries:

I don't know. I totally get the ethos of the album but it's like girl, this can't be all of what your holidays/hot girl summer sounds like. But she loves a deluxe so maybe there's more up the vault that might help complement these tracks more.

I just randomly played a few tracks today on youtube and i liked what i heart

is it a case when ATRL hates the album that its actually GOOD?

I'm shocked that Weezer isn't suing for a writing credit on Maria. Island In the Sun sounds verrrry similar.

As a preface, this is my first ever post on here. But wow! What a mess…

If you would have told me in September that this would be the fate of this era- I would have never believed you. The lack of promotion, lack of artistry… it's beyond me. Dua Lipa was supposed to be the next big thing and this album proves that she never will be.

Now don't get me wrong, it is NOT a bad album. It just isn't polished. This would've been a very acceptable project had it been released just off the back of FN, perhaps right after she finished touring or even during her break- as an EP or something cute to give to the fans. But not like this, never like this. She should've never left her management.

Also, releasing a summer album and not including cherry, Berlin summer etc? What wasted potential!
