BlackoutZone Posted May 2 Posted May 2 Just now, Yes, AND said: They didn't do that. You need to read it again. Nah some of them clearly do, the absurdity of the album lacking personality, because she's not announcing every step of her personal life to the public so the world can connect the songs to it. End of an Era is full of personality, it's cheeky, it's self-aware, it's fun
Augmented Posted May 2 Posted May 2 COME ON FRENCH EXIT! Yes Dua, yes fantastic production, yes interesting instrumentation, yes slightly unusual melody choices

Taylor was also panned tho. OT: I knew this was going to be panned… and the critics loved Houdini. She missed the mark so hard with the album ugh, it's sad to see it

Honestly (and sadly), thats probably true. Not everything needs to be a long dissertation of your life filled with details and meta commentary. Why can't music just be fun? 💀 2
Delusional Posted May 2 Posted May 2 This is so perfect. Anthem after anthem for the hopeless romantics, whew
Lady Claire Posted May 2 Posted May 2 It will open with around 65-67 on Metacritic. I don't think it's a bad score but poptism is truly over

Virgos Groove Posted May 2 Posted May 2 (edited) Just finished and I'm calling it now: time will be VERY kind to this album. The attention to detail in the instrumentation is unlike anything we've seen in a capital-P pop album in years. Maybe the hooks aren't as instant as FN, but this is very clearly a step FORWARD in her sound. In an era where it feels like all the hits are rough-draft demos, hearing an (mainstream) album this expensive-sounding is refreshing. Dua is very clearly a student of the pop greats. Some others could learn a thing or two. Edited May 2 by Virgos Groove 10
wildsidenormani Posted May 2 Posted May 2 A common theme in these reviews seems to be how she described the sound of the album; perhaps she shouldn't have mentioned psychedelia, britpop or rave music 1
_Fey Posted May 2 Posted May 2 Did anyone else give it a bad review besides line of best fit? Also that review is genuinely bad. Pop is really in a bad state if the main reason you're trashing an album is because the artist isn't revealing enough about their personal life.
cayonboxhearts Posted May 2 Posted May 2 I musta loved you more than I ever KNEWWWWWWWWWW cause I'm happy for YOUUUUUUUU
seancarter Posted May 2 Posted May 2 3/5 from the Guardian.. which is her home country... embarrassing lol 1 4
Asherio Posted May 2 Posted May 2 Pitchfork will probably drag her for the same reasons I can already tell. Dua better glue her red wig real hard.
Delusional Posted May 2 Posted May 2 Ppl are really hate training for this - the way I don't understand why at all It's such a gorgeous and expensive sounding album, and she's so passionate about the art and message she puts out whew 2 2
Galah Posted May 2 Posted May 2 Halfway through but so far this is easily her worst album to me. "Whatcha Doing" is the only good album track so far. Love Dua and the singles so really wanted to enjoy this album. Hoping it will grow on me. 1
Augmented Posted May 2 Posted May 2 Illusion…yet another track that misses the mark on some pretty basic pop principles. Like yes Dua absolutely does not need to reinvent the wheel with her pop music, but if you are going to do pop well you can't always rely on slight production changes throughout the track to make up for not changing up the vocal delivery, delivering rather face value lyrics etc. 2
cayonboxhearts Posted May 2 Posted May 2 need the tiktok and ship editing girlies to get onto happy for you fr

This album is definitely not as accessible as FN but it's a really interesting turn in her sound and way better than if she had just made FN 2.0. 6
_Fey Posted May 2 Posted May 2 The Independent — 100 Rolling Stone UK — 10 The Irish Times — 80 The Telegraph — 80 iNews — 80 DIY — 70 NME — 60 Evening Standard — 60 The Guardian — 60 The Clash — 60 Financial Times — 40 The Line of Best Fit — 30 This is such a crazy spread fjdjdjdj I was low-key expecting mainly 7-8s with a handful of 6s and 9s. 30 and 40 are insane.
Augmented Posted May 2 Posted May 2 Falling Forever omfg finally I've been dying for her to flex her vocals again! Was NOT expecting a power pop song on this album so that interesting 1
popstickle Posted May 2 Posted May 2 I've just finished my first listen and am disappointed. Houdini is the only track that has any grit or personality (Happy For You has promise) but the rest seem too restrianed and safe. She should have really pushed it more in my opinion and I really don't understand why she likened it to UK rave/90s britpop/psychedelic music as those references don't resonate with me on first listen.
