The extended version is not for me :sosad: I like the extra verse and I wish the original version had it

The extended version is enjoyable. True, some parts sound clunky production wise, like it wasn't polished well enough but it's still fun in general and the longer bridge makes it really enjoyable since it's my favorite part of the song. The extra verse gives it a bit more dynamic melodically speaking, I don't know why she scraped that part. Anyway I'm probably going to listen to the extended more than the official.

I like Houdini, but my problem with the song is that it feels very one note from beginning to end.

Not even in the extended version is there a beat transition when Dua's vocals hit the track... she just appears (a la Houdini, I guess)

That 3rd verse definitely helps keep the song engaging since it breaks the melody a bit. Hopefully she makes the extended version the album version :lee:

I unfortunately do not think I will return to the extended version. It just feels like it drags on only to go nowhere and the extended parts are very lackluster. The verse seems like its mixed entirely differently or recorded after the fact. Something about it sounds very out of place.

I was so hoping and excited for them to extend the break down at the last 30 seconds of the song, but they just extended the rest of clunky parts.

The whole original song needs to be redone, adding that breakdown at the end as the main (post) chorus music would make it much more enjoyable.

Why would they scrap Training Season though?

She needs to ride this out over Christmas and move onto the next single neatly, been saying since this song dropped it’s too clunky production wise to smash.

Some of yall have never followed a Dua single's chart behaviour and it shows :lmao:

I’ve been following every one of her singles since Hotter than Hell :stare:

Then why don't you know that all her hits took multiple months to properly blow up?

I personally just think the bones of the song aren’t there for this to blow up the way her other songs did, and she’s not usually one to debut high and drop either the way this song did. I’m happy to be proven wrong but while this song is a great listen and I don’t skip it when it comes on, every other Dua single I had on repeat for days when they dropped.

Baby... the extended version is a mess. These unmixed vocals that sound like they were recorded on a 1997 Walkman in a bathtub, lyrics about 'freeing the people' that make no sense in the context of the rest of the track?

I'm forgetting this ever happened and sticking with the OG.

People melting down like the extended version is that different from the OG. Get a life :toofunny2:

Everyone thought the same for Levitating, it had one of the worst radio callouts during that time, gained 2M for 5 months straight after extensive promotion and tiktok campaign. Also, it doesn’t matter if whether Houdini flops in US or not, No lie, STBL, Physical never broke into US and now have billion streams!

the extended is great, maybe Ill replace it with the og once the album is out

Venting: God there’s nothing I hate more than a success stan. Always complaining about numbers, complaining about promo not being enough, complaining about the song not having the formula to be a hit; always criticizing the artist for every little thing just cause of some chart placement and always never knowing when to stfu about it. people like that ruin the fun for everyone else. The amount of ppl on Twitter who were gagging over Houdini just to say it “aged” after first week and start switching on Dua is crazy. I don’t even blame the loves here for not even wanting to engage in this thread anymore, and it doesn’t even surprise me that the Twitter loves that genuinely enjoy Houdini like I do aren’t even active anymore because their tl (just like mine) are filled with people complaining about numbers. :rip:

I feel like Dua can't really go wrong whenever she drops anything.

I truly did enjoy the extended mix! At times the vocals do sound a bit out of place but I like that. Makes it seem like it's live? Kinda like the DSN live version.

Also this version does drive the psych vibes into full force! It feels chaotic and unhinged in the best possible way whereas the OG is polished up and clean.

Both are bops! I will be streaming both like crazy.

the ONLY problem I have regarding this era is that she abandon Houdini for a while because she's currently busy campaigning for DTN. Other than that, I'm still happy that she released a brand new song before the end of the year, along with an extended mix too :jonny:

I truly don't care if this bombing, even after Christmas season ended, this is still one of the best singles ever release in 2023 (at least for me) and i trust Duallah what she's going to do next :clap3:

A DTN/Houdini mashup Grammy performance would be great

This is such better way of saying how I feel than I can haha. I’ve always replayed Dua’s singles. Even we’re good, freaking love that song.

i have no desire to hear Houdini anymore, it just doesn’t have that magic she usually has. I skip when it comes on. I really do think this is the first dud of her career.

but still looking forward to the album because I LOVE LOVE tame impala and I know there are gonna be some gems on this album. I bet TS is gonna slap.

I'm in the same boat, this song and Room For 2 are the only Dua singles I didn't have on constant rotation when they came out, it's an extremely rare miss from her. I really can't place what it is that doesn't click with me in this song though, the only song I've ever been equally as conflicted about was Perfect Illusion years ago which was perhaps not coincidentally produced by Kevin as well.

It just lacks sugar. Yeah the production is awesome, it's super complex in parts and includes all the bells and whistles. We have a key change, synthesizers, a dramatic outro, a neat hook, but I also feel like cramming all of this stuff into one song much like Perfect Illusion did feels overwhelming. Once I get through listening to all these different things I don't really want to dive immediately back in. It's not easily digestible.

All of this said I still like the song and I'm dying to hear it live or in the club, but I can see why there could be a chance it doesn't take off.

If the new verse was repeated twice for the bridge I think it would have been better for the song, even though I LOVE the original “bridge”

If you’re actually that tired of the song then there’s no need to keep coming back here to post :toofunny3:
