2024 US Election Megathread ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ›๏ธ

Message added by Lee!!,

It was decided based on feedback from the spring 2023 town hall to transition this thread back to being election specific. With the Civics section being able to house specific threads on many issues, we think having a generalized politics thread is not completely necessarily anymore.ย
ย

With that said, please continue to be respectful and remember that you do not always need to respond to everyone.ย

What an embarrassment. Republicans trying to punish Disney have made it so Florida taxpayers will have their property taxes go up 25% in one year, all of Disney's tax debt has been wiped clean and they're getting a $163M tax break every year.ย

ย

But this is by design. The counties that are affected by this voted for Biden in 2020 and for Desantis' opponent in 2018. The new Republican attack is to 'punish' people for not being Republicans. Just like how Trump's tax bill lowered taxes for the 1% and raised taxes for people living in blue states.

Macron's lead over Le Pen is increasing by a lot after effectively linking her as pro-Putin. This is a very god strategy for dems going into the midterms. Watch them continue linking republicans to Trump :rip:

ย

Ah, yes, the thing that will surely get young people, Latinos, and black Americans out to vote.... Putinย :skull:

Not to dogpile, but I think Putin is pretty sanitized in American because Democrats have been rallying against Putin since before the 2016 election. So it wouldn't really be anything unusual or novel for Democrats to talk about Republicans being the "party of Putin". I think that would have been something they'd say even if Russia didn't invade Ukraine.

So the State is retaliating against a company for opposing their laws? Isn't that illegal? Doesn't that go against the companies 1st amendment?ย

I think what this shows more of is that when a not so popular president is against the same horrible opponent again the voters rather have the current one then the one they definitely didnt ย last election ย ?ย

ย

which could also happen here in 2024.ย

Well, thatโ€™s really all she needs. Democrats genuinely donโ€™t agree that thereโ€™s anything wrong with voting for the lesser evil, because theyโ€™ve done so their whole lives and look down on anyone who doesnโ€™t do so happily. To compare Biden to a bowl of **** (even if the comparison is apt) is among the biggest insults you can give to a voter base short of calling them a basket of deplorables.

His approval rating is down a lot since their 1st race, so Shontel running that again may not be as effective percentage wise as last time. But we'll see.

In general, maybe, but among Democratic primary voters who seem to love establishment Democrats like Biden, Clinton and Pelosi unconditionally, will that be a factor? That certainly won't be a factor among the Orthodox Jewish population in Cleveland Heights.

ย

Besides which, even though there's a general sense of malaise about the Biden presidency, partisan Democrats that aren't happy with the way things are going might also be like:ย

But don't you know? The problem is clearly that Democrats are trying too hard and the country is just too conservative to go along with what they want to accomplish. :'(ย

ย

Biden's woke communist policies have wrecked our economy and the voters are taking notice of the fact that the Democrats and their reverse racism against white people are running this country into the ground. Therefore we need the GOP to save us from Bidenflation with their Red Tsunami in November's midterms. :'(ย

Why is Steve Schmidt acting surprised that this is where weโ€™re headed? Mediocrity was all you were ever gonna get from a Biden Administration. Thatโ€™s what they got. They won. They got exactly what they wanted.ย
ย

Just absurd to pretend that this was ever going to end up any differently. Establishment, neoliberal politics has been dying for a reason. Democrats are still desperately clinging onto it with fossils like Biden and Clinton while Republicans are adapting to populism whims that voters actually want.

loser look at how Chris Smalls โ€” who led the organizing effort after being fired from Amazon โ€” and his allies put this win together, and are threatening to win again soon, shows that you actually canโ€™t have mass organizing without electoral victories. The two very much work together, not as an either/or.

One of Joe Bidenโ€™s most aggressive appointments as president was naming Jennifer Abruzzo general counsel of the National Labor Relations Board. With pushes to make unionizing significantly easier, she might be the only person that bothers the Wall Street Journal editorial board more than Federal Trade Commission Chair Lina Khan. In December, under pressure, Amazon agreed to a critical settlement with the NLRB, in which they agreed to allow workers to organize inside their facilities, just not on the shop floor.

โ€œThis settlement agreement provides a crucial commitment from Amazon to millions of its workers across the United States that it will not interfere with their right to act collectively to improve their workplace by forming a union or taking other collective action,โ€ said Abruzzo in a statement at the time.

Distinguishing it from a Big Labor-led union drive, the Amazon Labor Union, or ALU, effort was driven by workers and former workers, who had access to the facility that professional organizers lack. Smalls said their ability to organize inside the plant was key to their success. โ€œThey try to install that fear into these workers, they try to tell them that they talk to us, they get fired,โ€ Chris Smalls told Jordan Chariton of Status Coup. โ€œBut the difference is this is completely worker-led. These workers that are on the inside get that information in real time. And that right there has been a huge success for us.โ€"

During a union drive by professional organizers at a Bessemer, Alabama, warehouse, Amazon hired union-busters who would walk the shop floor and talk to workers, telling them how awful unions are. The initial vote, which was prior to the NLRB settlement, failed. A redo is still being counted but looks bad for the union. In Staten Island, workers were able to fight back by exposing them from the get-go.

Without that work inside the warehouse, and without all the organizing in that tent outside the warehouse, thereโ€™s simply no way they could have successfully organized the union. And without the NLRB forcing Amazon to allow that organizing to take place, that organizing wouldnโ€™t have been able to happen.

You can tell that they genuinely just don't care, which is why GOP stars like the-man-who-gave-us-Palin are somehow part of The Resistance and claiming the only issue is 'messaging' or posts like the above trying to steal Amazon union work and credit it to Dems.ย :skull:

ย

They claim this ideological objections to demands yet then don't provide their own solutions because they have no solutions.

ย

"We don't want to reward rich kids by forgiving their loans" - okay... then just instruct the Secretary of Education to forgive loans for just people who make under a specific amount? The DoE have this data?? Nearly everyone with student loans files taxes??

ย

"Uhhh we ummm believe that Biden can forgive debt but ONLY through programs Congress already created - trust us" - okay... then use his powers to forgive the debt of people currently enrolled in income-driven repayment programs established by Congress? The DoE already has the income information since it's literally part of their job to track as part of the repayment plan??

(Spoiler: The DoE is so inept that they don't actually know how many people are part of its IDR programs)

ย

"Um Biden has already instructed Congress that he'd sign a bill that would change it so those who are RESPONSIBLE payers and complete all 20-25 years of monthly payments under IDR would have their remaining debt forgiven and it NOT be taxable income :)" - Congress already passed it so that all student debt forgiven from now until January 1st, 2016 is NOT taxable, so why not just forgive the debt NOW??

Democrats hate their base and will suffer the consequences of letting their base suffer come November.ย :skull:
