Did you experience Glitter in real time? I did. I was 16 back then. Glitter had the best promo campaign out of any of her albums in my country of Germany. Several reatail chains had their own Glitter shopping bags, we got postcards, flags, promo posters everything and HUGE CD stands and cut outs in stores. Virgin gave it their all in my country and the album peaked at #7.

In a couple of weeks the Anniversary Edition will be release physically in my country. <3 Imma buy the vinyl set. 1

stevyy Posted January 19 Posted January 19 Just now, !ngwe said: Why do you think it failed? Bad album? Sabotage. Much like how Janet disappeared from European charts after the SB incident... my country and Europe in general follows the US and the US media at the time reported very negatively about her and those narrative were taken up by the European press. Glitter, ironically, performed the best in France in Europe... bc The French Press at the time was not repeating what the US press was typing up. Glitter had quite wonderful psoitions initially in Europe.. like #3 in Spain and #5 in Italy, #7 in Germany and so on. The people were there and then they disappeared. However, no radio channel would spin a track off that album. In Asia it was a different story as well. But in Japan for example, Glitter was released by Sony Music and the Japanese media did not know what should be wrong with the album or Mariah as the artist, so the album performed quite well there. I even remember reading that Tommy Mottola was reprimanded by the Sony Japan executives for his handling of the situation with Mariah in 2001-2. He was ordered to appear at the headquarters. 2 2
stevyy Posted January 19 Posted January 19 BB is wrong, her best attendance was with TAOM and CB tour (internationally anyway). I refuse to believe that TAOM with more than twice as many shows, had less attendance. 1
folkhoax Posted January 19 Posted January 19 I also experienced post-divorce Mariah - and let me tell you that the less clothes she wore and the more rappers she included in her songs, the more people abandoned her. It's good that there were other major world events happening at that time that she could blame, but the truth was that her image at that time threw off many of her mild-moderate fans. After Glitter, only hard-core fans remained. Loverboy was great but how did she expect her male GP fans to buy her record in stores? Her branding/image during this time was very niche. Good thing whoever managed her career during Charmie and TEOM saw all this and stopped her shenanigans.

Girl, what Shenanigans being her best music with a thumb on the pulse of pop culture, cute outfits, and fun music videos? And on what planet did that stop during TEOM - people just realized how ahead of the curve she was with merging hip hop into pop music.

Pls, the only one we should all blame here is motorola, not her clothes or rappers, or something else. If it weren't for his sabotage, Glitter would have been an amazing era in her career 1
James_Dean Posted January 19 Posted January 19 I was at UO and talked myself out of purchasing the Hero 7" cause it's too expensive and kinda uglee... the collector in me is now kinda regretting it

Ibrahim Posted January 20 Posted January 20 6 hours ago, stevyy said: Mariah also earned her biggest tour in 25 years: Christmas One and All grossed $29,6 million on its 16 dates with 214,000 tickets sold. https://www.billboard.com/pro/mariah-carey-merry-christmas-one-and-all-tour-2023-earns-30-million/ Smart business queen. "Relegated to" is looking pretty profitable. And mind you, she doesn't *need* to tour for the song but it's synergistic. The GP made her song hit number 1, she rides the high with a tour and slowly incorporates her catalog into the tour, feeding back into her legacy catalog. 4 hours ago, stevyy said: 18 songs and except for Supernatural... all of them are epic. This is so haunting. That slow version of Thirsty has touched my soul and inner being as a human entity with conscious feelings and self-awareness. It re-birthed me. Admittedly, I skip Thirsty. But if redid it like this epic build-up, I may reconsider. 1

stevyy Posted January 20 Posted January 20 I have also realized now that "Money" is one of Mariah's top 3 career best songs. Elusive really did that. 1 2 1

Elusive Chanteuse Posted January 20 Posted January 20 Great numbers but underwhelming for someone of her status. Hopefully she starts touring a month earlier this year internationally and get to $50 million.
