70. Kal Mann

Kal Mann's career began writing comedy, until his friend Bernie Lowe encouraged him to try to write song lyrics and they founded Philadelphia based Cameo Records together. They soon had their first hit, "Butterfly" by Charlie Gracie which went #1 in 1957. The label developed a close relationship with Dick Clark who featured their artists on his show "American Bandstand" where teenagers would dance to top 40 music, which helped turn many of Kal Mann's songs into hits. Indeed, many of his songs capitalized on popular teen dance crazes of the time such as The Twist, The Watusi, Mashed Potato, The Limbo, The Popeye Waddle, and The Bristol Stomp.

 

It seems like Kal Mann and Bernie Lowe did not think too highly of their songs and the teens that bought into them, and were just churning out as many quick hits in as little time as possible for profit. When Dick Clark moved "American Bandstand" from Philadelphia to LA in 1964, and British Invasion bands started capturing the American public's attention, Kal Mann and Bernie Lowe sold their stakes in the label, and that was pretty much the last we heard of Kal Mann.

That means those songs don't count towards the total because they charted on the "Top 100" charts which is a predecessor to the Hot 100, but I still included them in the table just for background info on songwriters that had hits before August 1958 (when we got the first Hot 100 chart).

99. Charles "Chad" Hugo

Chad Hugo is one half of songwriting and production duo The Neptunes. He grew up in Virginia Beach and plays saxophone, guitar and piano. He went to school with Pharrell Williams and started making music with him in the late 80s. They began having hip-hop and R&B hits as producers and songwriters in the second half of the 90s, with artists such as BLACKstreet, Mase, SWV and Total, and then began working more and more with pop artists in the 00s, such as Gwen Stefani and Justin Timberlake. His most recent hits were in 2018 with Justin Timberlake's "Man of the Woods" album.

69. Bob Seger

Michigan born heartland rocker Bob Seger started making music as the front-man of his high school band, the Decibels, in 1961. He was inspired by many popular rock and pop acts such as James Brown, Elvis Presley and The Beatles and spent much of the 1960s joining various bands and trying to get a radio hit, until he got "Ramblin' Gamblin' Man" to #17 on the Hot 100 in 1969. After struggling to scrape the bottom of the Hot 100 with his follow up singles, he went to college for a bit but music was still his main passion and he continued writing music and working with different bands. He was able to maintain his music career thanks to local support from Detroit, but struggled to achieve nationwide success, performing to a full stadium in suburban Detroit in summer of 1976 and then for less than a thousand people in Chicago the night after.

 

However, later than year he finally got the mainstream success he was hoping for, as "Night Moves" became a huge hit, and his newfound success boosted his previous albums by millions of sales. This time, the success was not fleeting and he was able to get several more hits over the next decade, including a cover of his song "We've Got Tonight" by Kenny Rogers and Sheena Easton in 1983, and a #1 hit by the Eagles written about his experiences with long-time friend and Eagles member Glenn Frey. In the late 70s, he was also sent a demo the song "Old Time Rock and Roll", re-wrote most of the lyrics, and his recording turned the song into a major hit. However, it seems like he lacked the confidence to ask to share the writing credit with the original songwriters, a decision he would deeply regret later since it became his most popular song. His last major hits were "Like A Rock" (#12, 1986) which he allowed Chevrolet to use in many ads to support the Detroit auto industry, and "Shakedown" (#1, 1987) for the Beverley Hills Cop II soundtrack.

Damn! I guess The Neptunes were no longer really a thing in the 2010s, where Pharrell completely overshadowed him (not that they were ever on a level playing field even before).

68. Neil Sedaka

A classically trained pianist, Neil Sedaka started writing songs at age 13 when he was introduced to Howard Greenfield, a 16 year old neighbour and aspiring lyricist. His first hit was "Stupid Cupid", which was released by Connie Francis in 1958 and reached #14 on the Hot 100. His debut single "The Diary" also charted at #14, but his two follow up singles struggled, so he studied the year's biggest hits to look for ideas. The result was "Oh! Carol", which was dedicated to his high school girlfriend, Carole King, and put his career back on track, as it reached #9 on the Hot 100, and launched a string of early 1960s hits.

 

However, his recording career was already slowing in 1963, and the arrival of The Beatles who made a different style of music popular on the US charts in 1964 hastened his decline. He had a few hits for other singers in the years that followed, but it wasn't until Carole King revived soft rock singer-songwriter music with "Tapestry" in 1971 that his solo career got a second wind. He replaced Howard Greenfield with Phil Cody as his main songwriting partner, and moved to the UK since he found he was getting more commercial success there. He then signed a record deal with Elton John, and got a second string of US hits in the mid 70s, including #1 hits Laughter In The Rain and Bad Blood.

Howard Greenfield's songwriting success started when he began writing songs with Neil Sedaka, who was his neighbour in Brighton Beach, Brooklyn. He was more focused on the lyrics while Neil Sedaka was more focused on composing the music. As Neil Sedaka's success as a performer left him with less time to write with Howard Greenfield, Howard started collaborating with other songwriters from his publishing company, most notably, with Jack Keller. He also wrote several songs with Helen Miller, and The Everly Brothers' hit "Crying In The Rain" with Carole King. Howard Greenfield and his partner both contracted AIDS and died shortly before his 50th birthday in 1986.

Keyboard player and drummer Rod Temperton joined European disco and funk band Heatwave in 1974. They were mostly playing covers when he joined, so he started writing songs for them, which led to their mainstream success. Their first hit was "Boogie Nights" (#2 Hot 100) in 1976, and he wrote several more hits for the band in the late 70s. However, Rod Temperton didn't enjoy performing and decided he would rather write songs for others and soon caught the attention of Quincy Jones who connected him with several artists. He got off to a good start, with Michael Jackson's #1 hit "Rock With You", and he also wrote "Thriller", "Off The Wall" and several album tracks for Michael Jackson. He also wrote 80s hits for several other artists such as George Benson, Patti Austin, Klymaxx and Donna Summer.
