BuzzAngle x HDD X RIAA

Featured Replies

Today I was looking at some BuzzAngle's pdf reports and found this:

Total Album Project Units (Audio Streams) = Album Sales + (Song Sales/10) + (OnDemand Audio Streams/1500)

Total Album Project Units (Total Streams) = Album Sales + (Song Sales/10) + (OnDemand Audio Streams/1500) + (On-Demand Video Streams/1500)

https://www.buzzanglemusic.com/wp-content/uploads/BuzzAngle-Music-2017-US-Report.pdf

It's basically the same formula for RIAA album units right? So does that mean that HDD weekly figures are also based on that (1:1500)? Or they weigh paid/free streams differently like Nielsen/Billboard to match its final numbers?

HDD I imagine uses that formula with the addition of shipments for WW stats (which is what the RIAA does and BuzzAngle doesn't do).

But for US, HDD uses the BB formula, otherwise their numbers would be drastically different.

i don't think it is shipments but that would also explain why Reputation sold like 8.5M ww using their formulas. It's because they weigh Youtube and Spotify/Apple Music equally according to BuzzAngle.

For US, I'm not sure about that since they're always trying to defy Billboard and stuff...

For WW I'm pretty sure they receive info from record labels, just like how BB sometimes does. Record labels will typically use the the RIAA formula.

Still not sure. Why would they update all her discography then? Labels usually report one album at a time like A Star Is Born on Billboard

I would say that the fact that HDD has such irregular patterns for releasing info about album's WW stats means that a label is supplying information. Why would a label supply information in a consistent manner? I wonder if there is any correlation with artists who have their RIAA stats regularly updated also having their WW numbers revealed by BB and HDD more.

Or it could mean just a different formula from your reputable sources?

The main problem is that we don't have an official and respectable source for album WW stats which includes SPS. IFPI is there but they still haven't added SEA/TEA. The only thing we have left are maybe certifications, and some of them are not automatic like UK's. So we could never say that they (HDD) have such irregular patterns since there's no other method of officially verifying their accuracy.

Irregular patterns for releasing their information. For example Taylor gets many updates for her stats but Beyonce and Britney will never ever get one because their labels don't really care about WW stats just like how they don't care to update either of their RIAA stats.

I don't know. Maybe they are focusing on artists who are releasing ''successful'' albums lately? she had an amazing run and still being able to pull these recent numbers is impressive. I've just found out that they reported WW figures for Camila and Post's albums too.

Who knows, I guess I could be wrong. :celestial5:

Though if they did have the capability to obtain WW info, you would think that they would take advantage of that and make an actual chart of it. Become the BB of WW stats. I'm sure that they would love that position.

Another thing that makes me think labels are behind those stats is that HDD is only partnered with Buzzangle, which only tracks US and Canadian information. Who is their secret supplier that is responsible for the huge task of obtaining WW information?

I wouldn't say OBTAIN but estimate with a little more accuracry. The difference between HDD and another blogspost that pretends to track WW sales is that they ACTUALLY have real numbers we don't, even if that means only in the US or Canada. Like who knows Apple Music streams? Youtube US streams? Tidal streams? Google Play Streams? Amazon exact streams? Guess only labels and Soundscan/BuzzAngle (HDD) could tell us that.

HDD uses the Billboard formula currently.

Off topic but do you know if Billboard includes pandora on those update streaming lists? Like how come Shake It Off has 1.09B streams according to them if it has only 517M views on VEVO? The rest 500M+ streams left are user generated?

It doesn't include Pandora.

Quote

Taylor Swift's Most-Streamed Songs (On-Demand)
1.09 billion, "Shake It Off" / 721 million, "Look What You Made Me Do" / 628 million, "Blank Space" / 527 million, "I Don't Wanna Live Forever" (with Zayn) / 442.1 million, "Bad Blood" (feat. Kendrick Lamar) / 442 million, "I Knew You Were Trouble." / 409 million, "You Belong With Me" / 371 million, "Delicate" / 316 million, "Love Story" / 311 million, "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together"

It specifies On-Demand, which means only streams where the listener chose to listen. Pandora is programmed streams they pre-decide.

It also makes sense because Blank Space has 628 million streams listed. It had 453m views on US Vevo, and likely has atleast 100m+ audio streams in US. So that's 553m+, and user generated video streams make up the rest.

If SIO got 400 million+ programmed streams, then I highly doubt Blank Space would've got less than 100m programmed streams since they were similar sized hits.

My guess is:

520m~ VEVO

150m~ audio

420m~ user-generated
