Multiple top tens on radio. Gaga: 34 years old, actually serving quality music that's different from what's being played right now, struggling to get airplay. And that's why radio should stop counting for the charts. It's sexist and ageist and not at all reflective of what people are actually listening to. I'd say it's more about the audience responding to Maroon 5's trash filler pop. Which they do, inexplicably. People have bad taste, it's nothing new. Adam Levine has cracked the code and serves up the same dish. Their streaming numbers also make it clear they are reflective of what people are actually listening to. As for Gaga serving quality music that's "different" - that never worked well with radio. They like to play it safe. A radio station wants to keep its listeners and so it tends to stay on a narrow path so they remain predictable.

It's an uptempo dance pop song, several of which have done well on radio in the past year, and it's a collab with one of the most relevant pop stars on the planet right now. It's just not catching on cause the GP doesn't like it. Fans gave it the initial boost to #1, but that's not enough to achieve longevity. Fact is, she and Katy both waited too long after having flop singles on radio, which is something that really does matter for the sake of getting airplay on Top 40. That's also why Halsey (a much younger artist, mind you) is struggling to get airplay now.

Ger
I'm truly surprised by how amazing "Roses" has done, it's definetely one of the biggest surprises of this year. Love the song, so I don't mind, but still very shocked.

Nah they just kinda hate her for some reason (including Nightmare cause they have no taste).

She waited a REALLY long time between Without Me and Nightmare, which was a dud and was never going to get played on radio. The time it took from Nightmare to Graveyard added onto that, so... yeah. She didn't establish herself enough to really justify that length of time in between pushing new singles to radio. Graveyard came almost 11 months after Without Me, and by then, radio had already moved on to the likes of playing Billie Eilish to fill her niche of dark, moody pop music for angsty girls. That's not to downplay the quality of her music, cause I loved Manic, btw. Just... she really took too long to have a solid pop-ready follow up to Without Me is what I'm getting at. I’m sorry but the waited too long argument is ridiculous. I guarantee you that the next Ed Sheeran single will smash on radio and he hasn’t released anything in over a year. And Harry won’t release anything for a long time too and I cannot see radio minding. And he’s not as established as Halsey Radio is sexist and ageist. And this is coming from someone who stans a 26 year old man. I don’t know if they’re being sexist and ageist against Gaga specifically because I haven’t looked closely to her recent history but that they generally are sexist and ageist is a fact imo. And who the hell knows what their problem is with Halsey. Be Kind should’ve been a hit

And who the hell knows what their problem is with Halsey. Be Kind should’ve been a hit Ed Sheeran's established himself as a radio staple since 2014 with multiple bigger hits than Halsey's ever had ("Shape Of You," "Perfect," "Thinking Out Loud," and "I Don't Care" were all massive, and he's even got "Sing," "Don't," and even "The A Team" did well for him as far back as 2012), and his older hits still receive stronger rotation than certain newer releases. He had "Beautiful People" as a radio hit just at the beginning of this year as well, in case you didn't remember. Halsey's radio career started as a feature in the second half of 2016, and she didn't really start getting minor hits of her own until "Now Or Never" first happened, followed by "Bad At Love" which was quite a bit bigger. Her only solo hit to actually SMASH on radio was "Without Me." That's not an established radio darling. She needed a follow-up much faster than 11 months. Sorry. And Nightmare was definitely not that single. It could have been a cute pre-order promo single to lead up to the album, but... then it wasn't even included on the album even though Without Me was the one that was supposed to be left off. An artist not putting our music every six months is not gonna make radio suddenly hate them Thats impossible to sustain and illogical unless we believe the radio programmers suffer from dementia If your argument is that after a long wait she put out a bad follow up, then sure, I could see that. doonerr
9 hours ago, Inner Insanity said: Adam Levine: 41 years old, serves the same basic filler trash pop every single. Multiple top tens on radio. Gaga: 34 years old, actually serving quality music that's different from what's being played right now, struggling to get airplay. And that's why radio should stop counting for the charts. It's sexist and ageist and not at all reflective of what people are actually listening to. I think this is more evident with Katy Perry, I mean poor girl had a few misses after a decade long period of scoring massive hits and they dropped her like that. And please don't talk to me about the haircut. It's like WB's Felicity all over again, when everybody said people stopped watching becauce of the haircut, but in reality the show moved to the death pit that was Sundays. Anyways... Witness' first few singles had the exact same sound Teenage Dream and Prism had, with a bit less catchiness or whatever, something that doesn't seem to stop any Maroon 5 single despite all of them being a copycat of their first comeback hits like Moves Like Jagger, One More Night, Payphone, Sugar, etc
Starkboy
you all are acting like Stupid Love wasn't getting massive pop updates when it was released. it was pushed quite high despite awful reception from the gp.

potent
13 hours ago, Inner Insanity said: Adam Levine: 41 years old, serves the same basic filler trash pop every single. Multiple top tens on radio. Gaga: 34 years old, actually serving quality music that's different from what's being played right now, struggling to get airplay. And that's why radio should stop counting for the charts. It's sexist and ageist and not at all reflective of what people are actually listening to. Streaming is even more sexist and ageist though (albeit less racist). Many female artists are only as high as they are because of radio.

Some people don't know what they are asking when they say they want radio to be removed from the Hot 100 Females and pop artists are gonna suffer the most. In fact without radio Megan The Stallion would have been the only female in the top 20 last week and Gaga, Dua and Gabby wouldn't have been in the top 20: Last week's top 20 (without radio points): 1 ROCKSTAR 2 POPSTAR 3 WHATS POPPIN 4 GREECE 5 Come & Go 6 Wishing Well 7 We Paid 8 Savage Love 9 For the Night 10 Roses 11 Savage 12 Blinding Lights 13 Party Girl 14 Go Crazy 15 Hate the other side 16 The Woo 17 Watermelon Sugar 18 Life is good 19 Conversations 20 Blueberry Faygo
