Simply put, the album just isn't as good as FN. There were a lot of misses. And the music videos were lackluster as well. The GP just wasn't interested in this era. She's becoming a bit too bland and as people have said here "faceless". She doesn't have an identity as a pop star. There's nothing to latch onto or be invested in. That's also why she has been unable to build a solid fanbase. Hell she doesn't even have a proper fanbase name :rip:

Lack of quality, easy as that

She gets dragged on Tiktok everyday for "her songs sound the same" and they are not wrong with that

Nothing

she was never gonna last

I told y'all she was this generation's Katy Perry

she never had a strong fanbase and the GP was all she had, once they got bored of her it was over.

her music and visuals have also been meh this era, even the album cover is disappointing

she was also ver overexposed with the FN era and the Elton John and the Barbie song

At least Katy had 3 huge albums with multiple #1 singles, and even her "flop" Witness era had a top 10 hit and over 1 billion views for a music video.

Dua hadn't even reached Katy's peak yet. They are not of the same caliber.

I never liked that Houdini was released in November when DTN was still on the charts, she just dropped the song, a few remixes after that and disappeared until Training Season.

I don't know what strategy her team was thinking of, but they should have recalculated the route a long time ago + Dukajin taking care of her career was a terrible choice

How are those hits local?? I'm not even american and everyone here could easily recognize any of those songs.

The same thing cannot be said about the Dua hits you listed.

She tried to make a mature and sophisticated album too soon. She should have kept it light and fun.

You also forgot

Firework (still gets played at every New Years Eve fireworks because it's that iconic)
The One That Got Away
Part Of Me
Wide Awake

All of these hits were way bigger than Dua's and a lot of them actually hit #1 btw unlike Dua

The music is a little boring but I mainly blame the visuals. All the mvs have no replay value

Someone leak the original ts mv!!!

My theory is that the label got involved and messed it up. The promotion for Houdini is at stark odds with the aesthetics and sound of the rest of the record. I like it, but it feels like some nonsense happened behind the scenes that we weren't privy to.

This. Dua saying the album was going to be one thing in a few different interviews and then handing us this pastiche of FN and her debut with visuals that felt completely divorced from what was initially being teased out… whatever she was initially cooking up with Danny Harle and Kevin Parker got scrapped because there's no way you get those two on the same album and have it sound this boring.

the drawn out release for TS also was not helpful and definitely contributed to a loss of momentum. It should have been dropped the weekend of the Grammy's

She isn't the girl you just stan? She is nice and unproblematic which is sweet but you need something different to have people screaming your name.

She looks more like an influencer who started a music career than an artist.

She was cooler in her debut though.

Nothing went wrong, an under-performance was inevitable - simply because she just isn't THAT girl. I don't see anything that makes her different from her peers like Charli XCX, Rita Ora, Ava Max, and Cher Lloyd. Plus, neither her vocals nor her performances are anything special. When you put it all together, she kind of comes across as being faceless.

Girls that's a piping hot take delete it. :ahh:

This is a light and fun record though. There's nothing sophisticated about it. The problem is that she presented it as such, but only committed to that sound half-heartedly.

copying my post from the other thread :eli:

dua has never been a huge debut type of pop girl like rihanna

she's always been about longevity and her eras and songs take time to grow. it has been this way since her debut in 2017 and this new era is nothing different

and this era is far from a flop. houdini has 400m streams

people said that about Houdini, then about Training Season and then about Illusion and now about the album

Meanwhile all the songs are flopping and Christmas is not an excuse anymore..

I'd say pretty basic and trashy, more than local.

Boring music. She can always make a comeback with the right songs, but this is just not it. Houdini was 'okay' (got old super fast) like a 6/10, the next 2 singles were 3/10 at best.
