Radical Optimism. What went wrong???

I'm not even trying to be shady

How the f*ck she debuts with 15.8M streams? :deadbanana4:

How the f*ck RO does half of what FN did, despite she being more popular now and having a bigger following?

What exactly did Dua and her team do wrong? How did they destroy all the hype?

her campaigning DTN when it was obviously not going to get nominated

she probably got her name in awards circuit but still

look at Billie releasing months after award season to start her era properly

the singles rollout was giving GUTS, and i know it's gonna be messier for her because she isn't an album seller or first week girlie :deadbanana2:

The music is missing the spark that FN had.

It feels like more of a pop trick now

There are in my opinion 2 huge mistakes: the big gap between FN & RO, and having Kevin Parker & Danny L Harle as the main producers

she waited too long for the album + the hype peak this year was during Training Season/Grammy performance and she waited like 3 weeks to drop that song :dies:

should've dropped TS in January and album in the grammy weekend (iirc nobody was releasing that week)

Nothing went wrong, an under-performance was inevitable - simply because she just isn't THAT girl. I don't see anything that makes her different from her peers like Charli XCX, Rita Ora, Ava Max, and Cher Lloyd. Plus, neither her vocals nor her performances are anything special. When you put it all together, she kind of comes across as being faceless.

The argument about the big gap doesn't make sense to me cuz she's remained active throughout the last 4 years. Promoting FN singles, Features, Droplets, Tour. It has to be something else

My theory is that the label got involved and messed it up. The promotion for Houdini is at stark odds with the aesthetics and sound of the rest of the record. I like it, but it feels like some nonsense happened behind the scenes that we weren't privy to.

copying my post from the other thread :eli:

dua has never been a huge debut type of pop girl like rihanna

she's always been about longevity and her eras and songs take time to grow. it has been this way since her debut in 2017 and this new era is nothing different

and this era is far from a flop. houdini has 400m streams

imo houdini was a poor choice of first single and the long trail-in after that was a bad idea, she let a flop narrative build up and drag on.

but also: dua is a likeable pop girl but the way that she's been built up into some sort of era defining star was always likely to end with a correction at some point. her songs are very hooky, she can make a banger - by the time i've heard them three or four times i'm usually absolutely sold - but i kinda feel like she's a bit more basic than she'd have us believe.

the kind of artiste vibes around her (and that she's enjoyed playing into in recent months) have never really been delivered on. perhaps the best idea would have been leaning into being a fun popstar rather than making out that she was reinventing music.

dropping TAP music probably didn't help

there was way too big of a wait from houdini to the album release.

i actually love all 3 singles. i think they are great pop songs. i really can't understand what went wrong. houdini / training season / illusion are all platinum records in my home. x

houdini, training season and illusion are diamond singles in my home

and radical optimism debuted 400m first day in my bedroom

yeah, overall the album isn't as good as FN but Houdini is a top tier song :coffee:

Houdini was a wrong choice, even though it might seem a shift from her previous records. It was too early to do that

Dance The Night is one of her most mediocre songs and sounds like a FN reject
