ATRL Moderator supaspaz Posted May 5 Author ATRL Moderator Posted May 5 EAST SIDE OF SORROW Average: 7.24 High Score: 10 (@supaspaz) Low score: 3 (@Alldeezy) While much of his album finds Zach Bryan tired of life on the road, we get a better understanding of why he’s still at it in this therapeutic affirmation. Zach isn’t just chasing fame, he’s also running away from loss – of his mother, of friends who died at war, of the soul of his crumbling hometown. “You better pack your bags west/Stick out your chest/And then hit the road,” he decides after a conversation with God. Yet “East Side of Sorrow” ultimately ends on the hopeful note of a trumpet and a mantra: “Let it be, then let it go.” Best bit: “Do you ever get tired of singin' songs/Like all your pain is just another fuckin' singalong?”
ATRL Moderator supaspaz Posted May 5 Author ATRL Moderator Posted May 5 It's been a rough rate for Zach. Not quite a massacre, but certainly a lack of respect!

ATRL Moderator supaspaz Posted May 5 Author ATRL Moderator Posted May 5 CADILLAC (A PIMP'S ANTHEM) Average: 7.33 High Score: 10 (@Reverie) Low score: 4 (@kandicha) Part feminist manifesto, part declaration of sexual power, Victoria Monét asserts that ladies can be pimps, too – and taunts that she fucked your baby mama – on this hazy groove from Jaguar II that’s “smooth like a Cadillac.” Best bit: “'Cause this pussy ain't no alley cat, we comin' from the jungle” ATRL says…: “She kinda sounds congested when she says ‘Smooth like a cadillac,’” @glitch observed.
ATRL Moderator supaspaz Posted May 5 Author ATRL Moderator Posted May 5 I was pleasantly surprised how well this one did, considering it's so low-key.
creativity. Posted May 5 Posted May 5 I don't think anyone will be surprised if the Kacey feature is Zach's highest song. This is ATRL, after all! (It's also easily top 3 on the album)

ATRL Moderator supaspaz Posted May 5 Author ATRL Moderator Posted May 5 $20 Average: 7.34 High Score: 10 (@supaspaz, @a_d_22) Low score: 4 (@glitch) The Julien Baker-fronted offering among The Record’s three joint lead singles – which spent a week at #44 on the rock and alternative chart – is a pure jolt of garage rock fuzz, a rebel yell about the mistakes we make when we’re young and dumb, trying to escape our past and running into dead ends, scraping by when life feels stacked against us and, well, just needing “$20” sometimes. Best bit: “It's a bad idea and I'm all about it” ATRL says…: There was a mixed response to the climactic screams. “Seeing Phoebe Bridgers scream in this song gives me life,” @a_d_22 wrote, whereas @glitch thought the song “was cute until they started screaming at the end.”
creativity. Posted May 5 Posted May 5 Yes I also find ~artistic screaming~ so irritating in music. Like that terrible Ethel Cain song. One exception: UCKERS by shygirl 1

ATRL Moderator supaspaz Posted May 5 Author ATRL Moderator Posted May 5 "$20" is one of my favorite songs of 2023
glitch Posted May 5 Posted May 5 16 minutes ago, Suilen said: Well, that was one of the stand-outs. Yep agreed. I don't get the hype for the Kacey song at all...I guess it's just because she's a woman
glitch Posted May 5 Posted May 5 Cadillac is great, one of the first songs on the album that clicked for me
ATRL Moderator supaspaz Posted May 5 Author ATRL Moderator Posted May 5 SATANIST Average: 7.38 High Score: 10 (@a_d_22) Low score: 5 (@Quicksand, @Ewan Chaos, @Achilles.) The members of Boygenius trade verses trying out extreme ideologies – Satanism, anarchism, nihilism – on this head-banging search for identity and companionship from The Record, which they performed on SNL. Best bit: “If the void becomes a bore, we'll treat ourselves to some self-belief”
ATRL Moderator supaspaz Posted May 5 Author ATRL Moderator Posted May 5 So who is missing the top twenty? It's a single.
