I actually much prefer this to the song version (obviously displayed by my score). It's quite captivating!

Oh some of the worst Olivia songs being snatched so early (alongside Boygenius) PERIOD.

Girl not the Vacaville ad :bibliahh: I don't live near there but one of my defining young adult moments was hotboxing a car for the first time and going to the Dennys there and trying not to cry of laughter while ordering food. Anyway on Zach, definitely glad the Lumineers song was the first collab song of his to be out.

Kinda shocked Emily I'm Sorry left so early. Not mad though!

There's got to be a record number of songs in this rate that did not receive any 10's

This is your struggle rate. I live!

But these albums are not bad y'all!

EMILY I'M SORRY

Average: 6.06

High Score: 10 (@Born to Run)

Low score: 2 (@creativity.)

The first single to exit the rate is this melancholy ballad about the dissipation of a relationship as the narrator loses her sense of self. Released as the joint lead for The Record, with a music video featuring Phoebe Bridgers in her underwear singing at a monster truck rally, “Emily I’m Sorry” charted for one week at #25 on the alternative chart. It is likely dedicated to voice actor Emily Bannon, whom Phoebe reportedly dated in 2018 and 2019, first as part of a polycule and then exclusively.

Best bit: “And I can feel myself becoming/Someone only you could want”

ATRL says…: @Ewan Chaos requested that “someone edit that Wendy Williams video where she's saying ‘Dula Peep I’m sorry’ with Emily’s name.” @glitch called it “bananis avocadis-core.”

I almost choked on my popcorn.

We kinda need the six-episode HBO limited series based on her dating history.

By the way, I can do a set of five this evening or wait another day and do another 10. I’m not sure if people like the longer updates or just want results.

HEY DRIVER

ft. The War and Treaty

Average: 6.22

High Score: 10 (@Ewan Chaos)

Low score: 1 (@Alldeezy)

Another howl of dissatisfaction with the musician’s lonely life on the road. Backed by husband-and-wife duo The War and Treaty, Zach Bryan imagines returning home before his whole life passes him by.

Best bit: “All the love I've had worth givin'/Was all spent on my songs”

ATRL says…: “I know the Kacey song gets the most praise, and it's great, but this is both the best song on the album and the best collab,” @Ewan Chaos praised. “I just love songs that feel like the group went into a room and had the most flawless one-take jam session. Quite possibly one of my favorite choruses of 2023.” @a_d_22, on the other hand, complained that “all my friends love this damn song but I honestly find it very annoying.”

AQUAMARIE LUVS ECSTASY

Average: 6.26

High Score: 9 (@4Real, @Ace Reject)

Low score: 2 (@a_d_22)

Amaarae is on her Janet Jackson tip on this hazy seduction from Fountain Baby. Feeling loved up on ecstasy, she spies someone across the club and promises to get them wet, though her soft moans of longing eventually grow monotonous over the Afrobeats-meets-smooth jazz instrumental.

Best bit: the syntactic syncopation gives lines like “I'm tryna love you like a…fiend” an extra pop

ATRL says…: @a_d_22 called it the “same as everything else on this damn album.” @Ewan Chaos compared it unfavorably to “Sex, Violence, Suicide”: “Two songs prior, she proved she could do a 4+ minute song well. Here... well…”

WATER FROM WINE

Average: 6.29

High Score: 8.5 (@Ace Reject)

Low score: 3 (@a_d_22)

Though its titular imagery is biblical, this Fountain Baby track is a sexual instruction manual – Amaarae likes it slow! – that culminates in the undeniable refrain, “Shake it, don’t break it.”

Best bit: “Shawty, I can't be caught in no love, what the fuck?”

ATRL says…: “Her voice is still annoying but this one isn’t as bad,” @a_d_22 said.

SUMMERTIME'S CLOSE

Average: 6.35

High Score: 8.5 (@supaspaz, @kandicha)

Low score: 2 (@Alldeezy)

What first appears to be a romance slowly unfurls into a memorial to a dearly departed loved one – perhaps Zach Bryan’s mother, who died of an overdose when he was 20 – on this wistful ballad about their long-ago adventures to the beach.

Best bit: the closing line, “Tonight I’m dancin’ for two,” is a beautiful reminder to celebrate those we’ve lost, not just mourn them

ATRL says…: “NOPE too country,” @Alldeezy cringed, “hate it.” @glitch wasn’t totally certain what he was hearing, but he was certain he didn’t like it: “I can't stand harmonicas (?) in country music.”

COOL ABOUT IT

Average: 6.36

High Score: 10 (@a_d_22)

Low score: 1 (@creativity.)

One of six Grammy nominations that Boygenius received this year was Best Alternative Music Performance for this Simon & Garfunkel-interpolating strummer where Julien Baker, Lucy Dacus and Phoebe Bridgers each take a verse recounting an excruciating reunion with an ex. Released as a single last fall, with a surreal music video about a woman and her dog, “Cool About It” was a moderate hit, reaching #34 on alternative radio and #2 on the adult alternative format.

Best bit: “Tellin' you it's nice to see how good you're doing/Even though we know it isn't true”

ATRL says…: “Why am I getting emotional at a boygenius song…” @glitch asked.
