Why is Janet doing so poorly on streaming?

it’s almost like there’s a certain demographic that acts obtuse on this topic. it’s the same answer. Spotify is already a pop leaning app. Janet Jackson is a/was a majorly R&B act. It’s not a coincidence that her most popular songs (All For You and Together Again) are some of her most obvious dance-pop material. It’s also not a coincidence that those are the songs that connected the most to Europe audiences (which is why we get so many thinking she’s forgotten threads).

Janet is far from forgotten. It’s why she can go on tour. Her music is ingrained in Black American culture. She has several classics. She probably does better on a platform like Apple Music since it’s more hip hop leaning and US focus. It’s also not like she’s tried pursuing commercial success to the same degree as her contemporaries in the later part of her career, so her streaming and playlisting is probably lackluster on a pop leaning app like Spotify.

the gays of my generation aren't going to give Janet or Madonna their proper dues until they are gone and that makes me sad

their loss though.

Janet is so legendary.

Madonna grinds so hard for her career, just count all the collaborations she's had in the past few years and she did manage to go viral a few times but people call her desperate and cringe. Janet does nothing and people call her lazy. Well what do you want.

Janet is out there touring, selling out shows and living her best life. She cares about NONE of this. Which is why she has her peace of mind + hips intact. :gaycat3:

the gays WISH they had a chokehold on her like they do other aging 90s divas … but they don’t! She’s not going to “slay”, “serve” or remain “snatched, mother” for random online homosexuals.

she has a son and a LIFE. Some of yall need to get that too! :gaynetcat4:

Her legacy and relevance to music has been horribly underplayed. I think it mostly has to do with marketing and her not really connecting with newer generations. The material is absolutely there. Her discography is a sea of gems.

her hooks punchline lyrics werent memorable to generals who couldnt hymn to her songs except remember melodies ala again, all for you, together again.

This is very true. It happened with Michael, Whitney, and Donna Summer.

Janet is mostly unknown. Like, 99% unknown outside of the US/UK/old gays.

It's not surprising.

Yall think just because a few uncultured young gays don't know her it's 99% of the population. Expand your horizons for heavens sake!

OT: we know that janets career was actively sabatoged by people higher up than her. It's one of the most tragic and blatant showings of music industry racism of all time tbh. People couldn't handle a black popstar that was doing it better than literally everyone else, so once they got the chance she was blacklisted.

She was the biggest female popstar in the world at one point that she had the highest paying recording contract of all time.

Luckily now it really came out how unfair, racist and disgusting the situation was, but the damage is done. Luckily she's able to still rebuild, and has. She has a career like no other iconic pop star.

While we're at it, since this is a pop forum go stream her iconic discography. If you haven't heard:

Someone To Call My Lover (the most effervescent pop song of all time)

All Nite (Don't Stop)

Trust a Try

Lonely

Feedback

Just a Little While

Runaway

Escapade (so ****** good)

The Velvet Rope

Throb

Those are just off the top of my head, stream them. Her full catalog is just so good with no filler. She takes so many risks, always reinventing. No credit. It's so hard for black women.

the day a Janet song goes viral on TikTok it's over for ATRL.

Also, I hope members here realize that Janet’s impact is set in stone. Even if she were to have 0 streams on Spotify. She’d still be far more impactful than 99% of your faves.

It's a shame that Tik Tok seems to be the solution for "relevancy" :rip:

This woman has been performing since the age of 7, has hits on hits and literally help create the blueprint and prototype for pop artists.

And suddenly all of her success and achievements are meaningless to some just because she doesn't have billions of streams.

It's laughable.

Janet has areas of improvement: playlisting, promotion, marketing and releasing new music.

But WHY should she have to release as much as Mariah, Madonna or Kylie? I don't think it's fair.

She is her own artist and one's creativity should not be celebrated solely on the frequency of their output.

Prolific doesn't always mean quality and each artist is allowed to have a life that doesn't revolve around the limelight.

I literally logged back into my old ATRL account to reply haha cause i just lurk

but like because of your thread i just listened to a few songs and i forgot that i liked her as a kid whenever she came on the adult contemporary radio stations cause that would be what my mom would listen to when driving around.

let me go give her more streams and rediscover her discography as adult cause i’m honestly tired of listening to just Taylor 💀

my goal this year is to give my flowers to other artists cause i wanna expand my taste than pop and edm hits lol

It takes a lot to market herself to a whole new generation of listeners. Some years ago she was kinda on a roll with good marketing with promo, collabing outside of her usual box (Made For Now), reissuing her biggest albums on vinyl and restoring her touring reputation with State of the World, etc.

Her team should invest on strategic streaming playlisting, work with more young artists, and… release a new album.

She has 4 songs with over 100 million streams. All For You and Got Til It's Gone have 2 different versions with combined amounts equaling 100 million +.

There are a multitude of factors (Super Bowl blacklist, poor playlisting, predominately R&B-leaning material) but it's a crying shame when she literally has one of the most diverse and boundary-pushing catalogs of any female artist.

The public is more interested in using her name to hate other people. It's sad because her work is great.

Correct.

It's a big undertaking without a label or aggressive team, but it's possible. I wonder how costly it would be.

She needs better management, that's for sure.

So you can only be a desperate embarrassing mess or do nothing at all? Those are the only 2 options?

Kylie Minogue doesn't exist?

Similar to Rihanna, she gave up on music too early. :monkey:

I blame her label/s. Janet is mismanaged and her labels are not doing anything.

And still, she got millions of monthly listeners. That alone proves the quality of her legacy.
