People still arguing that Houdini is just a regular pop song  no it’s not avant-garde or experimental but it also doesnt sound like the songs that smash on the Hot 100 right now. Greedy, Water, Lovin on Me, My Love Mine All Mine, PTTR are all much more lowkey while this is more maximalist dance music.

The 8 second snippet of TS already sounds way more accessible for the GP.

 

However I think making Hoedini the lead will pay off in the end

Obviously Houdini is too ambitious for a lot of "pop" stans online. If it's not Max Martin or Dr. Luke then it's too weird for some.

It doesn’t sound like another FN song the same way none of the songs on FN sound like each other. They share the same funky disco undercurrent. The only slight sonic difference in Houdini is that it uses more organic instrumentation rather than the heavy electronic focus a lot of the tracks on FN have, but the reason everyone keeps comparing them is because Houdini absolutely does belong in the same universe.

 

I agree that the songs ambition is why it’s not performing right now. Most pop songs have a simple melody that catches in your head and brings you back to the song, the hook, this song doesn’t have that, it instead replaces a catchy hook with production maximalism. There’s dramatic synths, organic instruments, heavily layered sounds, a key change, instrumental breaks, the dramatic outro. It’s a lot. 
 

 

The song is an awesome showcase for how Dua can ride more complex sounds and produce impactful pieces of work, but is also a perfect example of how less is more if the goal is commercial success. It’s a great song regardless but I’m not surprised at the initial struggle to take off.

I was expecting a big dance track though? Like obviously it could turn into that since we only have 8 seconds, but wasn’t the whole idea that there was going to be a huge choreographed performance of it at the EMAs? 
 

Regardless, it does sound more approachable for the US public at least, can’t wait for ESPN to use it on all their off season sport training montages.

Shes the typical artist who heard sth wasnt good, worked on it, got praise for the improvement, and then stopped trainign and got satisfied.
