Yeah but I can't have multiple reasons why the song grew on me, like what's wrong with having two reasons?? @shelven

ELEMENT'S CRITIQUES

Sorry, I have some time sensitive errands to run so I have to edit a few critiques in later. But all my scores are in.

Spoiler

Alena - Rare - She

Will edit in detailed comments later

ATRL Username - Beatopia - Beatopia Cultsong

I am overall pretty content with this submission. I think it has enough specificity about the production choices and overall mood/atmosphere to be a successful description. I do feel the song choice itself may be a bit of a cop out. You chose what is effectively an intro (and eliminated it from future use)... and I don't know if intros are designed to "grow" so much as other songs (since they are really just there to set the scene). However, your explanation and personal realization justifies it well enough.

Auburn - The Velvet Rope - Free Xone

Flawless entry! This was succinct yet extremely effective. You helped us understand how you did not understand the lyrics or sound as a 5 year old, but it grew on you through the years as you embraced your sexuality and encountered other genres of music. Great, great job. Put it as next season's "grower" round example @Sanguine.

Dessy - Jaguar II - How Does It Make You Feel

This entry relies a bit too much on the song's position in the album and the energy of its neighbors. I would have loved to learn more about your personal music taste and enjoyment to help understand why HDIMYF started off as a less impressive track and grew on you. For example, why exactly do you now appreciate the "come down" energy of this song? Are there personal moments where you play this or seek this song out?

EriKills - Trouble - Controversy

I think this was right up there at the top with Auburn's entry! You set the scene well, explaining why you did not understand the song at first and refused to connect with it. You began to appreciate various elements of the song for a mix of reasons, both lyrically and sonically. Outlining those specific examples made for quite an on-point essay.

MusicLoverDude - Midnights - Dear Reader

You spent a lot of this entry dissecting the meaning of the song, but I really did not come away from this understanding how the song grew from the "bottom half" of your ranking to the top. You say that you understand her better after dealing with your own struggles, but this is a pretty broad statement and could have been expanded on more. Were the lyrics in the preceding sentences representative of your struggles? I can see how these lyrics "humanized" Taylor for you -- but also, you don't really state this as the reason that you didn't like it originally. I'm still not clear why you didn't like it on your initial listen.

nostalgic - Dignity - Dreamer

PinkBox - Rebel Heart - ***** I'm Madonna

I'm not surprised to see this was your choice! It's definitely a controversial song and I had the same experience -- saying wtf at first, but then it hits. Your explanation is a bit surface level for me. I didn't feel it was necessary to discuss the music video; you could have used that space to discuss specific lyrics and sonic choices that grew on you. You did a nice job of explaining how this song show's Madonna's adaptability and the album's diversity, but I would have liked to see how that tied into your own personal growth/realizations.

PoisonedIvy - Miley Cyrus & Her Dead Petz - Milky Milky Milk

I am greatly enjoying all of your submissions so far! You have a really enjoyable writing style; combined with this unique album, your entries are always quite refreshing (like a cool glass of milk). This is another solid entry, with a unique and valid reason as to why you didn't enjoy the song to begin with. I'm screaming that it took some drugs for you to click with MMM, but honestly I can totally see it. You nicely weaved some lyrics into describing your own state of mind. Your reference to still needing some time with the production and the melody could have been expanded a bit more to perfect this entry.

Post Malone - Unapologetic - Nobody's Business

NGL I did not expect this entry to go in this direction, but it makes a lot of sense. I have experienced that inner battle with certain songs before, where either the subject matter or the featured artist is something that I do not want to support. Many thinkpieces and essays could be written about Rihanna and Chris Brown's complex roller-coaster of a relationship.  I liked how you showed some personal growth too with your opinion, and allowed yourself to be more open to enjoying the song despite the controversial feature. I understand shelven's critique -- you didn't necessarily show us why specific elements of the song are growers (sonically or lyrically). However, I think Chris Brown's presence is a valid reason to boycott and I appreciated the amount of history and emotion you put into this deeply personal experience.

Psycho - Emotion - Warm Blood

I HATE this song, and I don't think it will ever grow on me. You definitely captured some of the key reasons why it is so unenjoyable. The essay is successful if not a bit impersonal; a lot of your statements rely on allegedly loving the rest of the album, but not exactly why you do. Towards the end, you state that "your music taste has evolved since your first listen" -- but I wish that we got more insight into exactly how it grew. What experiences or other artists/genres did you encounter that led to this evolution?

stupidjock - Mercurial World - Follow the Leader

Overall, a nice essay with a decent explanation of why you did not comprehend the song at first. I would have liked a little more detail in this section to show exactly what aspect of the lyrics challenged you. The personal anecdote about hearing it live was very unique and powerful. Sometimes, we need a moment like this to really transform our opinion on a song or artist. I've experienced it too!! Also -- be mindful of spelling in the future, as typos make the entry look a bit unpolished.

ughgabriel - Halcyon Nights - In My City

I'm struggling with this entry, because I do see the vision and the core concept is GOOD. A song that you can't understand as a young person, but it is more impactful 5 or 10 years later. Great. Love that. You end up using a lot of your word count describing the song in generic terms. You also built the premise of your essay with very impersonal language, whereas the prompt asked you to dive into personal reasons that this song grew on you. I leave this essay deeply wondering: what experiences or evolution have you had that allows the current version of yourself to connect with this song and "meet with little Gabe once again"?

ultraviolence.xx - Raven - Let It Go

I can definitely tell that you had a hard time with this specific theme, and I think that's a testament to the consistent atmosphere of the album. Nothing particularly stands out in a negative way. You have some decent references as to why the sonics may not be as impressive as neighboring tracks; however, the overall contrast between your before and after opinion is not very distinct. "Stillness can be a destination" is a gorgeous concept though!

wehavetostan - The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess - Kaleidoscope

Overall, this is an entry that gets the job done but ends up in the middle of the pack for me. Your opinion "before" makes sense, but I didn't feel there was much personal connection to the "after". You said that it is an emotional listen, but you didn't really seem emotional about this statement. What entrances you about this song now personally?
